Why is constructive criticism so hard to take?

Like, I know it’s supposed to help me grow, but my low self-esteem hears “Maybe try doing it this way” and immediately translates it to “You are the worst person alive, and everyone knows it.”

It’s not even about being stubborn—I genuinely want to improve. But the second I get feedback, my brain short-circuits into full defense mode. Sometimes I have to take a deep breath, remind myself it’s not a personal attack, and fight the urge to crawl into a hole for a while.

If you also struggle with this, same. Learning to separate my worth from my work is a process, but we’ll get there.

How do you handle constructive criticism without spiraling?

... Read moreConstructive criticism is often seen as a vital part of personal and professional growth. However, many people find it difficult to accept. This difficulty can stem from various factors, including low self-esteem and the fear of being judged. When receiving feedback, it is essential to understand that constructive criticism is not a personal attack but a means to help you improve. Recognizing the difference between constructive criticism and outright negative comments can also empower you to learn from feedback without spiraling into self-doubt. One helpful technique is practicing mindfulness, which can ground you and provide perspective when you feel defensive. Before reacting, take a moment to breathe and reflect on the intention behind the feedback. Additionally, fostering a growth mindset can significantly alter how you perceive criticism. This mindset encourages viewing challenges as opportunities for growth rather than threats. Seek out constructive feedback intentionally, challenge yourself to embrace it, and remind yourself that every person, regardless of their success, has faced criticism. Transformation often arises from discomfort, and accepting constructive feedback is an essential step in that process. Overall, learning how to accept and implement constructive criticism can lead to newfound skills, resilience, and confidence.
