Martial Arts Belt Cookies

I earned an orange belt in my martial art recently, and celebrated by making these belt cookies. While an orange belt is less impressive than a black belt, it’s an accomplishment worth celebrating for me, because it’s something I never thought I could do.

I’m not a natural athlete, but I wanted to get stronger. I’m a lover, not a fighter, but I wanted to be braver. Signing up for muy thai kickboxing and jujitsu was a scary, daunting task - but I wanted a challenge, and I trusted the power of consistency.

Day-by-day, progress seems small - but now that I look back - I realize just how far I’ve come, and how one good habit, bleeds into the rest of your life.💪

Take on that challenge, and never feel silly for celebrating every step of your journey! 🍪🥋

... Read moreIt's truly amazing how a small achievement in martial arts, like earning a new belt, can feel like such a huge milestone! I know many of you, like me, are looking for unique ways to celebrate these personal victories, especially for kids and adults practicing Taekwondo or Karate. While my original post shared my joy of making 'Martial Arts Belt Cookies' for my own orange belt, I wanted to dive deeper into how you can create these fun treats and other ways to make every belt promotion special. First, let's talk about those adorable martial arts belt cookies. They're such a hit! From my experience, classic sugar cookies are the perfect canvas. They hold their shape well and provide a neutral base for all the vibrant colors. You can use your favorite sugar cookie recipe, or a store-bought mix for convenience – no judgment here! Once your 'round cookies' are baked and cooled on a 'cooling rack,' the real fun begins with the decoration. For the 'light frosting,' I usually go with a simple royal icing. It dries firm, which means no smudges when you're stacking or transporting them. You can easily tint it white for the base, or even light blue or yellow if you want to get creative. The key to making them look like actual belts? 'Colorful candy ropes'! Licorice laces or thin candy strips work perfectly. Just cut them to size, gently press them onto the frosted cookies in the middle, and then loop them to mimic a tied belt. You can even add a small dot of frosting to secure the 'knot'. Remember the 'various belt colors' from Taekwondo, Karate, or Jujitsu? This is where you can truly personalize your cookies! Think about the spectrum: crisp white for beginners, sunny yellow, vibrant orange (like my recent achievement!), lush green, serene blue, regal purple, earthy brown, fiery red, and of course, the ultimate goal – a strong dark brown or black. Making a batch with different colors is a fantastic way to represent the progress through the ranks or to celebrate a group achievement, especially in a Dojang or Dojo setting. Beyond the cookies, celebrating martial arts achievements can take many forms. I've seen schools do small ceremonies, or families throw themed parties. Whether it's a new Taekwondo stripe or a Karate black belt, acknowledging the dedication is what matters. Perhaps a small gathering with friends and family, decorating with martial arts themed banners, or even just a special dinner. Personalized gifts, like a new piece of training gear or a custom patch, can also be incredibly meaningful. It's about recognizing the consistent effort, the discipline, and the bravery it takes to step onto the mat and commit to learning. Every step, no matter how small, is a testament to growth, and that's always worth celebrating. So go on, make those cookies, throw that party, and be proud of your journey!
