Alocasia Blues 🪴

My #alocasia is putting me through it. 😅 The first pic is when it was in perfect health. The leaves started to turn brown and some fell. I decided to cut back all the leaves and watch it work. The 2nd pic is a leaf pushing through after a week of cutting. I’m wondering will more come.

Anyone ideas how to keep this beauty happy?

... Read moreOh, the beautiful yet notoriously dramatic Alocasia Infernalis Pink! I totally get what you're going through, because my own journey with this stunning plant has been a rollercoaster of emotions. When I first brought my Infernalis Pink home, I was mesmerized by its dark, iridescent leaves – they truly have an otherworldly glow. But that initial bliss quickly turned into anxiety as I started noticing those dreaded brown edges and yellowing leaves, much like what you've described. After a lot of research, trial and error, and a few heart-stopping moments (like having to chop back almost all the leaves!), I've picked up some crucial tips that I hope can help you on your Alocasia Infernalis Pink journey. It's all about understanding their unique needs, which are a bit more specific than some other houseplants. First up: Light. My Infernalis Pink absolutely thrives in bright, indirect light. I keep mine near an east-facing window where it gets gentle morning sun, or a few feet back from a south-facing window. I learned the hard way that direct, harsh sunlight can scorch those delicate leaves, causing unsightly brown spots. On the flip side, too little light can lead to leggy growth and duller foliage, so finding that sweet spot is key. I've found a light meter app on my phone to be surprisingly helpful in gauging the light levels in different spots around my home. Next, and perhaps the most critical for Alocasias, is humidity. These plants are tropical natives, so they absolutely adore high humidity. I aim for at least 60-70% humidity around mine. I achieve this by running a small humidifier nearby during the drier months, and I also place its pot on a pebble tray filled with water (making sure the pot isn't sitting directly in the water). Misting can offer a temporary boost, but a consistent humidity source makes a world of difference in preventing those crispy, brown leaf edges. Watering can be tricky. My rule of thumb is to let the top two inches of soil dry out before watering thoroughly. I always check the soil with my finger – if it feels slightly damp, I wait. Overwatering is a common culprit for yellowing leaves and root rot, which is a silent killer for Alocasias. On the other hand, letting it dry out too much, especially in high heat, can also stress the plant and lead to brown tips. I use filtered room-temperature water, as chlorine and cold water can sometimes shock them. For soil, I found that a chunky, well-draining mix is essential. My current mix is a blend of orchid bark, perlite, and a good quality potting mix. This ensures aeration and prevents water from sitting stagnant around the roots. When it comes to fertilizing, I use a diluted balanced liquid fertilizer every 2-4 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer) and hold back completely in winter, when the plant tends to slow down or even go dormant. Seeing new growth after a setback, like you are, is incredibly rewarding! It means your plant has resilience and you're doing something right. Keep observing your Alocasia Infernalis Pink closely – it will tell you what it needs. Every plant is a little different, so what works for one might need slight adjustments for another. Don't be afraid to experiment a little. We're all learning plant parents here, and the journey is part of the fun!
