Things I say daily as a PEDS nurse

2025/11/14 Edited to

... Read moreYou know, beyond the daily phrases I use to connect with my tiny patients, there's another fun part of being a pediatric nurse that often sparks conversation: our scrubs! While my current go-to might be my trusty teal set, like the ones you see in my mirror selfies, I often get asked about 'pediatric nurse pink scrubs.' It's a popular choice, and for good reason! I've seen so many amazing nurses rock pink scrubs, and honestly, the color can make such a difference. For kids, especially the really little ones, bright and cheerful colors like pink can instantly make you seem more approachable and less intimidating. It breaks down that initial barrier, turning a scary hospital visit into something a little softer. It's like a visual hug before I even say, 'the BP cuff is going to give you a quick hug!' When I'm picking my scrubs, comfort is always key, but so is how I'll be perceived by my patients. A cute set of pink scrubs, or even a fun patterned top, can sometimes be a great conversation starter. 'Wow, I love your pink shirt!' a child might say, and just like that, we've built a tiny bridge. It’s not just about looking good; it's truly about creating a positive environment. And let's be real, sometimes a pop of color is just what we need as nurses to boost our spirits during a long shift! Wearing a distinctive color, whether it's vibrant pink or my preferred teal, makes us recognizable too. Kids quickly learn to associate certain colors with friendly faces. My ID badge is always prominently displayed, of course, but the overall look contributes to that professional yet comforting image we strive for. It's all part of making the hospital a less scary place. Choosing scrubs isn't just a random decision for me. I consider the fabric for breathability and durability – essential for those active shifts! But the color and style also play a big role in my personal approach to pediatric care. While corporate guidelines might dictate certain things, there's often room for personal expression. Sometimes it's a specific shade of pink, other times it's a pattern with kid-friendly motifs. It's about finding that balance between professionalism and making a child feel at ease. I remember one time, a little girl was so anxious about getting her vitals checked. She kept clinging to her mom. But then she spotted a nurse down the hall wearing the most vibrant pink scrubs with little cartoon animals. Her eyes just lit up! Suddenly, she was curious, pointing and asking about the nurse's outfit. It was a small moment, but it completely changed her demeanor. That's the power of something as simple as a scrub color. So, while my uniform is typically teal, I totally get the appeal of 'pediatric nurse pink scrubs.' It's more than just fashion; it's a tool in our toolkit to connect with kids, make them feel safe, and bring a little bit of joy into their day. Plus, who doesn't love a bit of color in their professional wardrobe? It’s all part of the unique, rewarding, and sometimes surprisingly colorful journey of being a pediatric nurse!

One of the hardest realities I’ve had to accept as a pediatric nurse is how many patients spend so much of their hospital stay alone. Some parents can’t be there because they’re working multiple jobs, caring for siblings at home, or living hours away. Others just… aren’t around much at all. As t
