Maybe just maybe why I’m gay now 😂💀 #wlw#leabiansoftiktok🌈 #millennial #fyppppppppppppppppppppppp
Looking back at the songs I had no business singing when I was younger brings a mix of nostalgia and self-discovery. Many of us unknowingly connect with music that reflects emotions and experiences we haven’t fully understood at the time. For members of the LGBTQ+ community, especially those identifying as wlw (women loving women), these songs can carry extra layers of meaning. When I was younger, I would belt out lyrics from artists who expressed love and vulnerability. At the time, these songs were just catchy tunes, but now they feel like clues to my personal journey. Songs have a unique way of helping us process feelings before we have the words for them. For me and many other millennials, music streaming platforms and social media have created spaces to share these moments — sometimes with humor and sometimes with deep reflection. Singing along to songs outside of one’s expected experience can be both liberating and confusing. It’s funny to realize how certain lyrics or feelings resonated without fully understanding why at the moment. I often reflect on how this influenced my realization of being gay and my connection to the wlw community. These experiences show how cultural touchstones like music can shape identity long before we consciously recognize it. Music also plays a big role in connecting communities — hashtags like #wlw and #leabiansoftiktok on platforms such as TikTok bring together people who share similar journeys, creating solidarity and spaces for self-expression. For millennials, these digital communities provide support that wasn’t as accessible in previous generations. In essence, those songs we ‘had no business’ singing when we were younger can become anthems celebrating our true selves. Embracing those memories and the emotions tied to them helps affirm our identities and fosters a sense of belonging within a vibrant global community.
