i’m in college for automotive and here’s some things i’ve learned from being one of the only girls💜
1. they’ll believe it when they see it. you’re going to be doubted and everyone is going to think you don’t know anything even when you do. you have to really put in the effort to learn and do things to prove them wrong.
2. you have to be super tough. people are going to be mean to you and act like you’re stupid but you can’t let it get to you. use it as even more incentive to prove them wrong.
3.you’re gonna be sexualized. i’ve had guys take pictures of my body without my permission. i’ve heard guys talking about my appearance as if it’s the only important thing about me, completely disregarding my abilities. stuff like this is gonna happen to women anywhere but i feel like it’s a little worse in a male dominated industry
4. just work hard. don’t be afraid to get dirty or look stupid or not be good at something your first try. everyone has to start somewhere.
disclaimer- of course not all guys are condescending and mean, i’ve met so many that are super nice and respect me too. (i’m dating one of them 💜)

Many female mechanics face skepticism and underestimation of their skills, which can create significant barriers. It’s important to recognize that the path may be tough but profoundly rewarding.
Research shows that diversity in the workplace leads to enhanced problem-solving and innovation. Women bring unique perspectives that can benefit automotive businesses, contributing to both creativity and productivity.
Building a support network can be invaluable. Connecting with other women in similar fields helps bolster confidence and resilience. Organizations focused on women in trades are emerging, fostering mentorship and community that empower women to succeed. Sharing personal experiences not only helps raise awareness but also encourages others to persevere despite challenges they may face as they pursue their passions.
Lastly, creating awareness around the issue of sexualization in male-dominated fields is crucial. Ongoing conversations and advocacy can change perceptions, leading to a more inclusive and respectful environment for all. As more women take on these roles and share their stories, the automotive industry can transform into a more welcoming space for future generations.
My sis worked with our father for only a few months before she decided that she didn't like the subject and moved on. During that time though, they had a few meetings, and the manager was genuinely surprised and happy to know a women, the ONLY women was working in their store.
Mechanic girly here too! ❤️ The group of guys you work with is so important too! I work at Toyota and the guys I work with are very respectful and kind and don’t see me as a woman they see me as a fellow tech.. which also means I get to hear ALL the jokes and banter. There’s no filter 😂
