... Read moreWhen I first dreamed of visiting Paris, all I could picture was the magnificent Eiffel Tower. And yes, it’s absolutely breathtaking, especially at night when it sparkles! But truly experiencing Paris, and even beyond into France, means diving deeper. I learned so much more by venturing out, and I want to share some of that magic with you, so you can truly 'learn about Paris' in a way that goes beyond the postcards. Beyond the iconic structure, make sure to visit the Notre-Dame Cathedral. Even with its ongoing restoration, its history and architectural grandeur are profoundly moving. Take your time to walk around the Île de la Cité, where it stands, and soak in the centuries of stories. Another absolute must-see for incredible city views and a different vibe is the Sacré-Cœur Basilica, perched atop Montmartre. The neighborhood itself, with its charming artist squares and narrow, cobblestone streets, is perfect for an afternoon stroll – you’ll feel like you’ve stepped into a painting! Don't forget to explore some of the grand palaces – whether it's the world-renowned Louvre Museum or the stunning Palais Garnier, the architecture alone is a feast for the eyes. One of my absolute favorite ways to truly immerse myself and 'learn about Paris' was simply to embrace the local pace. Find a spot on one of the bustling Parisian streets, pull up a chair at an outdoor café, and spend an hour people-watching with a coffee and a croissant. It’s an art form! The energy, the fashion, the conversations, and the sheer elegance of daily life are all part of the experience. I also loved exploring the local markets, like Marché des Enfants Rouges, for fresh produce and delicious street food. And as the original post wisely suggests, don’t limit yourself to Paris! France is a treasure trove. If you have time, exploring regions like Bordeaux for its world-class vineyards and delightful gastronomy, or Normandy for its profound historical sites (like the D-Day beaches and Mont Saint-Michel) offers a completely different perspective of the country. Each region has its own unique charm and history waiting to be discovered. For practicalities, visiting between September and November truly is a fantastic tip. The weather is often pleasant, the summer crowds have thinned, and you can often find better deals on flights and accommodation. Getting around Paris is incredibly easy with the Metro – it’s efficient and connects you to almost every corner of the city. Make sure your passport is ready and plan out a rough itinerary, but also leave plenty of room for spontaneous discoveries. Comfortable walking shoes are a must! Learn a few basic French phrases – even 'Bonjour,' 'Merci,' and 'S'il vous plaît' go a long way in connecting with locals and showing respect. Paris isn't just a collection of landmarks; it's a feeling, a culture, and an endless source of inspiration. Go, explore, and let the city teach you its secrets!
