I’m done carrying old debt into a new year — and you shouldn’t want to either.

My New Year’s resolution is to pay off my remaining credit card balance: $6,944.11.

My goal? Gone in 5 months or less.

I’m using everything available to me — Christmas money, tax returns, and my regular income. But before I touch my 9–5 paycheck, I have to know exactly what my monthly expenses are.

For some, a simple pen-and-paper ledger is incredibly effective because the act of writing down every purchase makes them more mindful. Others, like me, swear by digital tools. These can range from a sophisticated personal budget spreadsheet calculator that you customize yourself, to user-friendly budgeting apps that link directly to your bank accounts. When using a spreadsheet, I love to color-code different categories like common monthly expenses (rent, utilities) versus variable spending (groceries, entertainment). This visual breakdown makes it so clear where my money is actually going. Plus, many apps offer features that automatically categorize transactions, saving a ton of time and giving you a clear overview of your spending patterns. Don't forget that even small transactions, like using coins for a coffee, add up, so track everything! Once you have a clear picture, the next step is reducing expenses. This is where the real "budget baddie" magic happens! Start by reviewing your common monthly expenses. Are there any subscriptions you're paying for but rarely use? That streaming service you signed up for just to watch one show? Cancel it! Look at your phone or internet bills – a quick call to your provider might score you a better deal. For variable costs like groceries, try meal planning. It sounds simple, but planning meals for the week and making a strict shopping list can drastically cut down on impulse buys and food waste. And when you're out, think twice before that extra coffee or snack. Every little bit saved adds up, and it's incredibly satisfying to see those savings grow. Understanding the broader money budgeting concept is also key. Beyond just tracking, consider adopting a budgeting method. The 50/30/20 rule (50% needs, 30% wants, 20% savings/debt) is a great starting point for many. Or, if you're serious about debt reduction, a zero-based budget where every dollar has a job can be incredibly powerful. The goal is to be intentional with your money, not restrictive.
