My salary vs. my expenses at age 28:

As a resident doctor, I am paid an annual salary which I break down to a monthly amount ($3934.16). My monthly expenses are as follows:

Rent: $1,278

Gym membership: $150

Peloton bike: $114

Groceries: ~$650

Disability insurance: $150

Pet supplies: ~$200

Gas: $200

Nuuly: $100

TOTAL = $3,242.00

Then I split the extra ~$692.16 left over per month between travel expenses, dinners out, other activities, and loan payments depending on my schedule each month!! I find it is very helpful to keep a budget excel sheet so that I am mindful of my spending. Right now my student loans are in an “income driven repayment plan” which gives me a lot more flexibility because the monthly payments are scaled to my current salary.

With significant expenses such as rent, groceries, and essential memberships, it’s crucial to prioritize spending. While the total monthly expenses amount to $3,242, there’s an additional $692.16 each month for leisure activities and savings, which is vital for a balanced lifestyle. Creating and maintaining a budget is essential for young professionals, particularly for those with student loans. The author mentions using an Excel sheet for budgeting, which can effectively track and manage finances. This structured approach helps in identifying unnecessary expenditures and ensuring that savings are made consistently. Moreover, being on an income-driven repayment plan for student loans offers more flexibility, allowing payments to adjust according to income. Such plans can alleviate financial pressures, especially in the early stages of one’s career. Overall, this financial breakdown offers valuable insights into the importance of budgeting and financial planning for residents or others in similar situations. It emphasizes the need for awareness of spending habits and the benefits of adjustable repayment plans for student loans.
