What I spend my money on?

Believe it or not, I’ve paid off credit cards, student loans, a car note, and more — all on what I consider a less-than-ideal income.

My turning point was finally learning how much money I spent each month. I had no idea where to start, and Excel was way too overwhelming. The basics are what changed my life: knowing my monthly expenses, clearly and honestly.

I’ve made a lot of cuts — streaming services, lowering my insurance, paying off my car — and this is the foundation of how I’ll pay off my remaining $6,944.11.

If you want a simple expense tracker with a beginner guide, tap Phase 1 in my Linktree. ✨ #budgetstruggles #budgetbeginnercommunity #expensetracking #budgetforbeginners #budgetingforbeginners

... Read moreIt's incredible how much clarity comes from simply knowing where every dollar goes. When I first started my debt-free journey, the idea of tracking every single expense felt daunting. But honestly, it's the most powerful step you can take towards financial freedom, especially if you're feeling stuck. Many people think you need fancy apps or complex spreadsheets, but manual tracking is where the real magic happens for beginners. It forces you to be mindful of each transaction. Here’s how I tackled it, and how you can too, whether you prefer weekly check-ins or a monthly overview: Getting Started with Manual Expense Tracking (It's Easier Than You Think!) Choose Your Tool: Don't overthink it. A simple notebook and pen, or a basic spreadsheet you create yourself, are perfect. The goal isn't perfection, but consistency. I started with a notebook, jotting down every purchase. Identify Your Categories: This is crucial. Think about your regular outgoings. My tracker (like the one you might have seen in my summary!) included staples like household expenses, dependent care (if applicable), insurance premiums, and even that gym membership. But don't forget the smaller, often overlooked ones: Fixed Costs: Rent/mortgage, loan payments (student loans, car notes), insurance, subscriptions (streaming services!). Variable Costs: Groceries, dining out, transportation, personal care, entertainment, shopping. Record Everything: For a week, or even a month, write down every single cent you spend. Keep receipts, check your bank statements daily, and don't judge yourself – just record. This is about gathering data, not perfection. You might be surprised to see how quickly those daily coffees or impulse buys add up! Review Regularly: I found that reviewing my spending weekly was a game-changer. It allowed me to catch 'money leaks' early. If I saw I'd spent too much on dining out by Wednesday, I could adjust my plans for the rest of the week. A monthly review then helped me see the bigger picture, align with my income, and plan for upcoming bills with specific due dates. This regular check-in helped me understand my "total monthly cost" and make necessary adjustments. Why Weekly Tracking Can Be Your Secret Weapon: While a monthly budget gives you an overview, weekly tracking offers immediate insight and control. It’s like checking your car's fuel gauge more often – you can refuel before you run empty! It prevents that 'end-of-the-month' panic when you realize you've overspent. Plus, for those with irregular income, weekly tracking helps you adjust spending to match your current cash flow. Cutting Costs Like a Pro (My Go-To Strategies): Once you know where your money goes, you can make informed decisions. My journey involved some tough choices, but they were worth it: Audit Subscriptions: Those streaming services add up! I cut down to just one or two essentials. Negotiate Bills: I called my insurance provider and found ways to lower my premiums. Many service providers are willing to work with you. Meal Planning: This drastically reduced my grocery bill and impulse takeout orders. Planning meals around sales and cooking at home saves a ton. Mindful Shopping: Before buying anything non-essential, I ask myself if I truly need it, or if it aligns with my debt-payoff goals. This simple pause saved me so much. By diligently tracking expenses and making conscious choices, I was able to find extra money to put towards my debts, whether it was credit cards, student loans, or my car note. It's a journey, not a race, and every small step counts. You've got this!
