Going to see the Statue of Liberty 🗽

2025/3/2 Edited to

... Read moreMy recent trip to the Statue of Liberty was absolutely incredible, and I wanted to share my experience and all the amazing things you can do there to help you plan your own visit! First off, getting there is part of the adventure. You'll take a ferry from Battery Park in Manhattan (or Liberty State Park in New Jersey). The anticipation builds as the boat pulls away, and the Manhattan skyline shrinks behind you, while the majestic Statue of Liberty slowly grows larger and larger. The ferry ride itself offers some of the best photo opportunities of Lady Liberty, Ellis Island, and the New York Harbor. Make sure to grab a spot on the deck for those panoramic views! Once you arrive on Liberty Island, there’s so much more to explore than just gazing up at the statue. Most people come to see the Statue of Liberty up close, but the island offers a full experience. My first stop was the Statue of Liberty Museum. It’s completely free with your ferry ticket and is packed with fascinating exhibits. I learned so much about the statue's history, from its construction in France to its journey across the Atlantic and its profound symbolism for freedom and democracy. They even have the original torch on display, which is truly a sight to behold! After the museum, I took a leisurely stroll around the base of the statue. Standing right at her feet, you truly grasp the immense scale and grandeur of this iconic monument. The intricate details are astounding, and it's humbling to be in the presence of such a powerful symbol. From various points on the island, you can capture incredible photos of the statue with the stunning backdrop of the Manhattan skyline. Don't forget to look towards Ellis Island, which holds its own significant history as the gateway for millions of immigrants. While I didn't get tickets to go inside the pedestal or up to the crown on this particular visit (they sell out months in advance, so plan ahead if that's on your must-do list!), I still felt incredibly connected to the experience. Even without going inside, there's ample to see and do on the island. You can also find a gift shop to pick up souvenirs and a cafe if you need a quick snack or drink. I spent a good few hours soaking it all in, and it felt like a truly worthwhile half-day trip. My top tip for anyone planning to visit? Book your ferry tickets online well in advance through the official vendor (Statue City Cruises) to avoid long queues and ensure you get your preferred time slot. Also, aim to go early in the morning, especially on a weekday, to beat the biggest crowds. Wear comfortable shoes because you’ll be doing a fair bit of walking, and bring a refillable water bottle, especially on warmer days. It's an unforgettable experience that everyone visiting New York City should try to fit into their itinerary!
