Narcissists have a unique way of manipulating situations to protect their ego, especially when it comes to infidelity. One common tactic they use is denial—refusing to admit to affairs even when there is clear evidence. This denial is often so steadfast that it leaves partners doubting their own perceptions. The narcissist’s insistence on innocence creates confusion, making it difficult for their partners to fully trust their own intuition or suspicions. Another powerful strategy narcissists employ is gaslighting. This involves making their partners question reality by denying events, twisting facts, or dismissing feelings. When confronted, narcissists frequently resort to blame shifting. They might accuse their partner of being the cause of their infidelity, claiming that the partner’s actions pushed them into the affair. This shifting of responsibility is designed to confuse and guilt the partner, diverting attention away from the narcissist’s behavior. Understanding these manipulative tactics is crucial for anyone involved with a narcissist. Recognizing denial, gaslighting, flying monkeys, and blame shifting can empower partners to protect themselves and seek recovery.
