how I lived with an esa (as a college student)

Living in a dorm with an ESA definitely came with a learning curve, but here are 4 ways I made it work (and kept both of us sane):

1. Routine is everything – I stuck to a daily walk + potty schedule, which helped my ESA feel secure and made dorm life way more manageable.

2. Training is key – Basic commands + crate training saved me from so many chaotic moments, especially when I had to run to class.

3. Boundaries with roommates – Clear convos from day one about space, noise, and shared areas made such a difference in keeping things calm. Unfortunately not everything turned out to be sunshine and rainbows and my roommate situation felt a little strained in my opinion.

4. Self-care matters too – It’s easy to put all your energy into your ESA, but I learned that I have to care for myself just as much to be the best support for them.

My biggest and most important tip is to only get an ESA if you are prepared to live your life around them. I met plenty of people in my dorm who would want a dog and then turn out and party and be out everyday. YOU CANT DO THAT. they need lots of care and lots of attention :)

... Read moreLiving with an emotional support animal (ESA) as a college student can be rewarding yet challenging. Many colleges are becoming more aware of the benefits of ESAs on mental health, especially for students dealing with anxiety, depression, or loneliness. Establishing a strong routine is crucial not only for your ESA's well-being but also for your own peace of mind. Daily walks and consistent potty schedules can foster a feeling of security for your ESA. Additionally, proper training can alleviate chaos during your busy academic life. Ensuring that your roommates understand expectations about noise and shared spaces is equally important, as clear communication helps create a calm atmosphere. Furthermore, don’t forget to prioritize your self-care; balancing your needs with those of your ESA will help create a supportive environment for both of you. If you’re considering getting an ESA, be prepared for the commitment and provide them with the attention they require for a fulfilling life together. Embrace the challenges and joys of having an ESA while navigating the complexities of college life, as it can lead to incredible growth and companionship.
