How I Picked My College Major

picking what you want to do for the rest of your life is kind of a crazy thing to throw at a freshly 18 year old senior in high school.

but here are some things i considered when deciding on my major. i hope these tips help!

first off, i am an accounting and management double major. im going into my sophomore year and im loving it!

🩵 figured out what classes i enjoyed in high school

when i was figuring out what major i wanted to declare my senior year of high school, i looked back on the classes i took and figured out which ones where my favorite. was there a running pattern? were all these classes in the same subject? was it the material i liked or was it the teacher? what majors are within or like the classes i enjoyed? i needed to answer these questions

i enjoyed all the math classes i took, i always have. calculus 1 & 2, geometry, all the algebra classes we had to take, etc. i loved them all. i bounced around before my senior on being a math teacher but that was a short lived idea, i only wanted my summers off 😂

but in my senior year, i took microeconomics and absolutely loved it. this is when i knew i really wanted to do something in business and that i could do well in a career in business.

🩵 figured out my passions

i have a lot of hobbies & passions so i can to see what the patterns were within them. were they completely different from each other? what is similar about them all? why did i like them?

business has always been a big passion of mine. i started doing social media in 2020 & thats basically selling yourself to brands for brand deals & running a business around yourself. i also published a poetry book the fall of my senior year & i loved it so much. having to figure out everything by myself & doing it was such a great learning opportunity that i loved. but i didnt want a career in writing or being an author. this was a hobby and i didnt want to make a hobby turn into something that’s stressful especially when its a hobby that allows me to release my emotions. i also started a lot of business that i still run to this day & i love them all.

find your passions but not everyone of them is meant to be a career.

🩵 job shadowing

job shadow different careers. job shadow your family members, friend’s parents, literally anyone you know. you could find a whole new career you never thought of or thought you’d like. you’ll learn what you like and dislike. this will forever be one of my top tips when deciding your future career!

i job shadowed a lot, i saw things i liked and disliked. i was very lucky to have a cousin who is an accountant & he really helped me cement my decision of this career path.

🩵 money > passions & hobbies

if you want to pursue your passions or hobbies, you need money for that. i always knew that i need a job that will be a stable income to afford my passions and hobbies. i saw a tiktok video about this as well & showed me that yeah, im not crazy for thinking this way.

you can have your passions & hobbies, but you need money to pursue them. if you want to turn them into a business, do it as a side hustle/job first to see if they become something bigger.

i hate to say it but not every dream needs to be followed yet, you can take your time. i’m not saying to not follow your dreams or to stop doing your hobbies/passions but to survive in this world today, you need a stable income.

like i said before, not every passion or hobby is meant to be a career. i found my love of business but im not stopping my career plans to open a business that will be my sole income yet, i need more money to do that. invest in yourself & your passions. to do that, you need to make money first.

🩵 Ai

whether you love or hate Ai, it’s taking over jobs now & will continue to do so. make sure that the career path you are choosing is hard for Ai to take over.

🫶🏻 these are just my tips on what i did, you do not have to agree with these tips or do them yourself if they do not apply or help you.

good luck with your college major decisions & if you have any questions, reach out to me anytime :)

... Read morePicking a college major can feel like a daunting task for recent high school graduates. It’s essential to reflect on your high school classes to identify subjects that excited you. Have you considered job shadowing various professions? This hands-on experience can unveil interests you weren’t previously aware of. Additionally, think about how your hobbies might translate into career opportunities without becoming burdensome. For example, if you enjoy writing, will it still be enjoyable as a career? Financial stability is crucial, so while passions matter, consider how you can support them financially. This balance can lead to a fulfilling career path. Lastly, stay informed about changes in the job market, including the impact of AI on various roles. Choosing a field that is less likely to be automated can provide long-term job security. Aligning interests with practical considerations is key to a successful college experience and career.

the only thing i'd keep in mind is some careers you need the passion in order to succeed and be happy. if you don't have the passion to be a doctor or a lawyer you're going to get burnt out fast

Why I picked my Major
I decided my second semester of senior year that I was going to go to college. I hated the idea of more school, but knew I wanted to do more with myself than just work in a factory. My advisor suggested Supply Chain Management because the student who had previously majored in it had great success.
