... Read moreSo many of you have asked about my 'day in my life' as a Pilates apprentice, especially while I'm still figuring out college! My initial post just scratched the surface, but I'm so excited to share more of the nitty-gritty details of this incredible journey. It truly is a huge commitment, but the rewards are immeasurable – the strength I'm building, the knowledge I'm gaining, and the confidence to guide others through movement. A typical day for me usually starts with early morning self-practice. This is where I really get to embody the exercises and focus on my own form without the pressure of teaching. I'll often run through a 'MAT BEGINNER Hundred' sequence, really concentrating on my 'BREATHING' – inhaling for 5 counts and exhaling for another 5, just like we're taught. It's all about connecting the abdominals to the breath and warming up the body. I also practice the 'Tabletop' position, ensuring my knees are just beyond my hips and my shins parallel. It's not just about doing the movements; it's about understanding the 'PURPOSE' behind each one, like increasing circulation or challenging stability. We also learn 'Modifications' for exercises, like keeping legs long and low on the mat for beginners or lifting one leg at a time. After my college classes, my apprenticeship really kicks in. This is when I spend hours observing, assisting, and crucially, practicing teaching with my fellow apprentices. We'll often work on 'APPARATUS' like the Reformer. Learning the 'REFORMER TECHNIQUE' for exercises like the 'Knee Stretch Series' is fascinating. We practice variations like 'Round and Arched,' focusing on pressing the carriage out and deepening the powerhouse. The 'Knees Off' progression is tough but so rewarding when you finally nail it! We also learn all the specific 'CUES' and 'SPOTTING PHRASES FROM THE ELDERS' – those little nuggets of wisdom that make all the difference in guiding clients safely and effectively. For example, ensuring abdominals aren't "popping" during an exercise, or guiding a client to "squeeze all the air out with legs" during certain breath work to engage the core more deeply. This 'Practice Teaching' is vital for becoming a confident instructor. Balancing this intensive training with college coursework can be intense, to say the least. Time management is absolutely key. I've learned to be incredibly disciplined with my study schedule and to make the most of every spare moment. Sometimes it means late nights, but the passion for Pilates keeps me going. The 'SELF PRACTICE' isn't just about physical training; it's also about mental preparation and understanding the method deeply. It’s about becoming a 'POWER PILATES CORE MAT I' level practitioner yourself before you can teach others. If you're considering becoming a Pilates teacher, here's my advice based on my 'day in my life': be prepared for the significant time commitment (it's more than I initially realized!), but know that it's profoundly enriching. Find a program with a fantastic support system, like my group of girls. Don't be afraid to ask questions constantly, observe experienced instructors, and most importantly, practice, practice, practice! Understanding the subtle client 'CUES' and 'SPOTTING PHRASES' for different body types and skill levels is crucial, whether it's ensuring a client's head stays lifted to avoid neck strain or guiding them to center themselves on the mat. It’s a journey of continuous learning, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything. My 'day in my life' as a Pilates apprentice is challenging, but so incredibly fulfilling!
