Carnal vs. Secular?! 🤔

2025/1/8 Edited to

... Read moreHey everyone! I know the terms 'carnal' and 'secular' can sometimes feel a bit confusing, especially when you're trying to deepen your spiritual walk. I've been on my own journey to understand what these words truly mean for a Christian lifestyle, and how they impact our everyday choices. It's not always black and white, but focusing on God's word and my personal experience has really helped clarify things for me. When I think about 'carnal,' my mind immediately goes to things that are purely driven by our human nature, our fleshly desires, and worldly urges. The Bible often refers to 'carnality' as being focused on earthly things rather than spiritual ones. It’s about letting our sinful nature take the lead. For example, 'carnal desires' could be anything from a craving for gossip to an unchecked pursuit of material wealth that pulls us away from God. It's about what appeals to our lower nature, things that are 'not about God,' as I've learned. The OCR even highlighted "fleshly things sickly" and "simply means that it's something that's not about God," which really resonated with me. Then there's 'secular.' This is often misunderstood as being inherently bad, but it simply means 'of the world' or 'not religious.' Think about 'secular music' – it's music that isn't specifically Christian, but it's not necessarily promoting sinful behavior. It's just... neutral, or focused on everyday life. However, the line can get blurry. As the OCR mentioned, "it's a lot of circular songs that aren't promoting sinful behaviors" but sometimes "things that are devilish in a way" can slip in. The key difference between 'secular music vs carnal music' is often the intent and *content*. Secular music can become carnal if its lyrics or message promote behaviors or mindsets that are contrary to God's will. So, how do we discern and grow? From my personal experience, and what I've been sharing, here are some thoughts on how to spiritually mature and navigate this: Examine Your Desires (Carnal Desires): What are you chasing? Is it temporary satisfaction or eternal joy? If I find myself 'watching baddies' or consuming content that stirs up envy, lust, or pride, I ask myself if it's drawing me closer to God or further away. The OCR's strong message to "cut it out immediately ASAP" when it comes to "carnal" influences is something I've truly embraced. It's about being honest with ourselves about what we let into our minds and hearts. Filter Your Entertainment (Carnal Music/Movies): This is a big one for me. I love music and movies, but I've learned to be really intentional. Is that 'innocent movie' or song actually planting seeds of ungodliness? 'Carnal music' would be anything that encourages sin, glorifies unhealthy relationships, or promotes a "worldly" mindset. If a song makes me feel agitated, or subtly encourages behaviors I know aren't right, I switch it off. It's about guarding our hearts and minds. Prioritize Spiritual Input: Just like our bodies need good food, our spirits need good nourishment. Spending time in prayer, reading the Bible, and listening to uplifting messages helps us build a stronger foundation. This helps us recognize carnal influences more easily. When our spiritual antennae are up, we can better detect what is truly 'not about God.' Seek Godly Counsel & Community: We don't have to navigate this alone. Having fellow believers who can offer support and accountability is invaluable. Sometimes, an outside perspective can help us see things we might be blind to ourselves, helping us identify and overcome "fleshly things." This journey of understanding 'vida secular y espiritual' is much richer when shared. Ultimately, it's a process of continually surrendering our will to God and allowing the Holy Spirit to transform us. It's about moving away from what's 'worldly' and embracing a life that truly reflects Christ. I hope my shared experience helps you on your path to spiritual growth!
