Coziest Queer-friendly city to visit this fall ☀️🍂🌊
Saugatuck, Michigan might just be my favorite town in the world… well at least the country!
I grew up visiting this lovely little town at least once a year and have come to know it very well. As a coastal city, it is perfect for a summer vacation and is usually crammed full of tourists from May through September, but I think more people should come here in the fall too 🎃
As long as you can brave the occasional storm and cloudy day, a fall weekend trip to Saugatuck is so worth it. To make the most out of your trip, you’ll need to do the following:
🌊: Take a morning walk along Lake Michigan. There are so many beaches with public access that you can check out (Oval Beach is the most popular!), but my personal favorite is actually Douglas Beach Park which is right down the road from downtown. I love to go on a little run here and then stroll along the water looking for rocks and shells!
☕️: Try out the amazing coffee shops and restaurants. Uncommon Coffee Roasters is one of my favorite spots to get a lovely tea and read! I’ve been to pretty much every restaurant and they are all delicious (Singapore Room is my favorite 🤩)
🛍️: Go shopping! I cannot get enough of the cute shops here… Saugatuck Spice Merchants is a must for great spices and teas, The Book Nook of Saugatuck is my favorite little bookstore, and the Owl House is where I get a LOT of my Jellycats!
💃🏻: Saugatuck is a very LGBTQ+ friendly town, and with that comes a lot of great night life! Try Wicks Park Bar & Grille for some great food, late night live music, and dancing! Pretty much anywhere you stumble into will be a hit. This town also LOVES a theme and has Halloween parties, ugly sweater parties, NYE parties… you name it!
⛵️: Get your boating on! It’s a little more difficult to find boat rentals available in the fall, but I recommend hopping on the Star of Saugatuck for a 90-minute cruise all around the water. You can get tickets for $34 or $42 depending on what deck you want to be on, and they often have themed events too!
Again, this town is my second home, so please ask me any questions you have! 💕
Fun fact: Emily Henry’s book Beach Read was based on this town! 📚 Also, you have to try blue moon and/or Superman ice cream… they are flavors unique to Michigan and the coastal Midwest 💙
