Poem Titus 1:9
Becoming a Spiritual Man
By Clay Sorrick
Be able both to encourage and to reprove,
A shepherd’s heart must gently move.
Correction heals what sin has scarred,
Kindness lifts what life makes hard.
Reproof is a gift when wrapped in care,
It guides the lost through humble prayer.
Encouragement, like rain from above,
Refreshes hearts with loyal love. (Titus 1:9)
“The law of Jehovah is perfect, restoring strength,”
Its wisdom reaches every length.
“The reminder of Jehovah is trustworthy, making the inexperienced one wise,”
A compass beneath the darkest of skies.
Strength restored, the weak will stand,
Wisdom steadies the trembling hand.
A spiritual man like I want to be must see,
That law’s perfection can set me free. (Psalm 19:7)
“To do your will, O my God, is my delight,”
Your “law is deep within me,” a constant light.
Delight births courage when storms assail,
And joy endures when others fail.
Reproof keeps that delight sincere,
Encouragement chases away fear.
A man who loves Jehovah’s way,
Will walk in His path both night and day. (Psalm 40:8)
“Praise Jah! Happy is the man who fears Jehovah,” true,
“Who takes great pleasure in his commandments,” too.
This happiness blooms from reverent care,
From humble hearts and earnest prayer.
Encouragement feeds this joy so bright,
Reproof ensures the path stays right.
Brothers spiritual men we’ll grow,
When fear of Jehovah helps wisdom flow. (Psalm 112:1)
“Happy are those conscious of their spiritual need,”
For the Kingdom of the heavens is theirs indeed.
Awareness of need keeps pride away,
And invites correction day by day.
Encouragement fills the soul’s deep lack,
Reproof keeps the wanderer on the track.
A spiritual man knows he must stay small,
So Jehovah’s wisdom can guide it all. (Matthew 5:3)
“I really delight in the law of God,”
According to “the man I am within,” flawed.
But inner delight must outwardly show,
Through words that heal and seeds we sow.
Reproof polishes the inward man,
Encouragement strengthens where life began.
So let us delight in God's refine,
The inner man to one divine.
(Romans 7:22)
“But the one who peers into the perfect law,”
Finds freedom’s beauty without a flaw.
“And continues in it… he will be happy,”
For obedience makes the spirit snappy.
A forgetful hearer turns astray,
But a doer lives the truth each day.
Reproof and encouragement, hand in hand,
Shape me into a man who can stand. (James 1:25)
