Uncomfortable plot line but kinda hot- new kink 🔓

⭐️Overall rating:3.5 /5: ⭐️⭐️⭐️✨

Brika-Fancows her boytiondis older brother t

handsome, strong, and completely terrifying. A college basketball star gone pro, he's more concerned with the dirt on his shoe than he is with her. But she saw him. She heard him. The things that he did, and the deeds that he hid...

For years, Rika bit her nails, unable to look away. Now she's in college, but she hasn't stopped watching him. He's bad, and the things she's seen aren't content to stay in her head anymore.

Because he's finally noticed her.

Michael Crist knows the hold he has on Rika, how much she fears him. She looks down when he enters the room and stills when he's close. He knows she thinks only of him. When Michael's brother joins the military, leaving Rika alone and unprotected, Michael knows the opportunity is too good to be true.

Three years ago, she put Michael's friends in prison, and now they're free.

Every last one of her nightmares is about to come true.

Spoilers⚠️ with my review:

These guys were school bullies who got sent to prison for what they had done and plotted their revenge the three years they were in prison. They didn’t deserve terrible treatment and their backgrounds have secrets they make u realize why they were so cruel but at the same time a bully is a bully.

The brother that becomes the ex is psycho don’t let him fade from your mind.

The wearing masks like your a purge character is a little whack. And there are multiple scenes that come off rapey. Just not a fan of those parts

Now do I love a sexy scene yes so the three way was hot AF lowkey turned on but a lot of other parts I wasn’t comfortable with.

I’m going to read the rest of the series but I don’t know how I feel about the first book. I loved the main characters though they developed nicely.

... Read moreHey fellow bookworms! After diving into my initial thoughts on "Corrupt" by Penelope Douglas, I wanted to chat a bit more about why this book, despite its truly uncomfortable moments, has such a hold on dark romance fans, and why I’m still compelled to read the rest of the series. First off, let’s talk about the absolute cornerstone of this genre: the Enemies to Lovers trope, perfectly embodied by Michael Crist and Rika. The OCR keywords nailed it – he’s the ultimate Antihero MMC, the Ex's Brother who’s completely terrifying yet undeniably captivating. That intense push-and-pull, the undeniable chemistry simmering beneath layers of hatred and fear, is what keeps you glued to the pages. It’s that forbidden fruit dynamic, where the lines between love and obsession, fear and desire, are constantly blurred. I mean, how can you not be intrigued by a character who has such a dark past and clear intentions for Revenge? It makes for a truly high-stakes romance where every interaction feels charged. The dark bully romance aspect is strong here. Michael and his friends, fresh out of prison, are seeking retribution, and Rika is their target. It’s a morally gray area, for sure, and the book doesn't shy away from depicting the psychological games and power imbalances. While some scenes definitely cross into what I'd call "uncomfortable" territory (as I mentioned in my review), that's often a hallmark of this subgenre. It pushes boundaries and explores the darker side of human relationships, which, for some readers (myself included, in certain contexts!), can be incredibly compelling. It’s about the intensity and the raw emotions, even if they're not always pretty. And yes, let's address the spicy factor! "Corrupt" certainly lives up to its reputation. The tension and chemistry between the characters are palpable, leading to some incredibly intense moments. The dual POV really shines here, allowing you to understand both Rika's fear and growing attraction, and Michael's complex motives and possessiveness. Getting inside both their heads makes the "spicy" scenes feel more earned and impactful, even when they're pushing your comfort zone. It's not just physical; it's deeply psychological and emotional, wrapped up in that dangerous allure. The original review mentioned a "three-way" scene, and it's definitely one of those moments that adds to the book's reputation for being daring and explicit within the genre. The OCR also highlighted "Secret Society" and "Found Family," which are subtly woven into the narrative through Michael's group of friends. Their loyalty and shared history add another layer to the revenge plot and the overall atmosphere of the book. And while not explicitly stated in my summary, the "Dual Timeline" element is present with Rika's past actions putting Michael's friends in jail, setting the stage for the present-day retribution. This backstory adds depth and explains the intense animosity. Ultimately, "Corrupt" isn't a light read, but if you're a fan of heart-pounding, morally ambiguous dark romance novels with antihero leads, undeniable chemistry, and a plot driven by revenge and obsession, then this book might just be your next addiction. It’s messy, it’s provocative, and it definitely leaves an impression. I found myself questioning things, but also completely hooked by the characters' journey. It’s a rollercoaster, and I’m ready for the next ride!
