Do I Actually Need PM Moisturizer? 🥺
I keep seeing moisturizers labeled for AM and PM, and I’m confused if I actually need a separate night moisturizer or if it’s mostly just marketing 😭
I have oily/acne prone skin, so I’m trying to keep my routine simple and avoid anything that feels too heavy or could clog my pores. Right now I have a non SPF PM moisturizer and a moisturizer with SPF, but I’m not sure if nighttime skin actually needs something different.
For oily/acne prone skin, is a PM moisturizer worth using at night, or is a basic lightweight moisturizer enough? And what should I look for in a night moisturizer if I’m trying to avoid breakouts?

From my experience with oily and acne-prone skin, using a dedicated PM moisturizer can make a difference, but it doesn't have to be heavy or pore-clogging. Nighttime moisturizers often contain ingredients that support your skin’s natural repair process, such as ceramides and niacinamide, which help restore the skin barrier and reduce inflammation without adding oiliness. One important factor I look for is a formula labeled as "oil-free" or "non-comedogenic" to avoid breakouts. Lightweight textures, like gels or lotions, work well for oily skin since they provide hydration without a greasy feel. I found that moisturizers with hyaluronic acid are particularly effective—they lock in moisture while being very light. Also, nighttime skin care focuses less on protection (no SPF needed) and more on repair and hydration. Although your current non-SPF moisturizer at night works, choosing one formulated for PM can enhance skin barrier repair during sleep. That said, the difference might be subtle, so if you prefer simplicity, a good lightweight, gentle moisturizer without SPF is adequate. In conclusion, a PM moisturizer isn’t absolutely mandatory but can benefit oily/acne-prone skin if carefully chosen. Focus on products with ceramides for barrier support, niacinamide for soothing properties, and hyaluronic acid for hydration, all in a lightweight, oil-free formula to maintain clear and balanced skin overnight.

You asked a wonderful question. A lot of skincare is fancy marketing, and you have stumbled upon one of these marketing tactics. AM and PM moisturizers primarily differ in how occlusive or thick they are. If you have oily skin, one light moisturizer used twice daily is sufficient. I wouldn’t use a moisturizer with sunscreen at night, however. I am always in favor of simplifying skincare routines, as they are less likely to cause irritation and also save you some $$$. #Lemon8Partner #SkincareInsider #AskDerm #askderm1
