When your partner expects you to parent him too

I recently had a baby (5.5 months old) and my partner works 8-hour shifts. I’m a SAHM and take care of her 12+ hours a day, plus managing the household and my health issues. He was originally supposed to do overnights so I could rest, but now when he’s home, he expects me to do everything: prep his meals, get him pillows and blankets, change the baby’s diaper for him… it’s like I’m his mother too.

When I don’t get up for night wake-ups (even though he’s perfectly capable), he makes a scene. I’m exhausted, sleep-deprived, and feel completely taken for granted. I’ve thought about leaving so he can see what it’s like, but I’m not sure if I should try talking boundaries again, push for him to do real overnights, or if I should just plan my exit. How do you handle a partner who treats you like the parent AND the child?

... Read moreOh, my dear, it sounds like you're carrying an incredibly heavy load, and that feeling of being "the mom AND the babysitter" for your partner is all too real and incredibly draining. It's completely understandable why you're feeling exhausted, sleep-deprived, and contemplating such big decisions. You are not alone in this; many parents, especially new moms, find themselves in similar situations where the balance of responsibilities shifts unfairly after a baby arrives. When you're at the point of feeling like you're on the verge of leaving, it's a huge red flag that something needs to change drastically. Before making any drastic moves, let's talk about how to approach this conversation with your partner, because your needs are just as valid and important as anyone else's in the household. 1. Choose the Right Time and Place: This isn't a conversation to have when you're both tired or in the middle of a conflict. Pick a calm moment, perhaps when the baby is asleep, or even suggest stepping out for a coffee together. Starting with "I need to talk to you about something important, and I need you to really listen" can set a serious but open tone. 2. Use "I" Statements: Instead of "You never help" or "You make me feel like your mother," try "I feel overwhelmed and unsupported when I'm managing all the baby's night wake-ups alone, especially after a full day with her" or "I feel like I'm doing two jobs – being a mom to our baby and a parent to you – and it's making me completely exhausted." Focus on your feelings and how his actions affect you, rather than accusing him. 3. Be Specific About Your Needs: Don't just say "I need more help." Clearly outline what you need. "I need you to take two overnight shifts completely, from [time] to [time], so I can get uninterrupted sleep." Or "I need you to be responsible for prepping your own meals and getting your own blankets, as I need to conserve my energy for the baby and household tasks." Set clear boundaries around what you won't do. 4. Explain the Impact: Help him understand the direct consequences of his lack of support. "When I don't get enough sleep, my patience runs thin, and it impacts my ability to be the best mom to our baby." Or "My health issues are worsening because I'm so stressed and exhausted." 5. Suggest Solutions Together: Frame it as a team problem. "How can we work together to make sure both our needs are met, and we're both contributing fairly to our family?" You might even suggest creating a shared list of tasks or a schedule for baby duties. 6. Consider Professional Help: If these conversations don't lead to change, couples counseling can be incredibly beneficial. A neutral third party can help facilitate communication and identify underlying issues. 7. Prioritize Your Well-being: While trying to fix the relationship, don't forget yourself. Even small moments of self-care can help. Can a friend or family member watch the baby for an hour so you can take a quiet bath or just have a cup of tea? Your physical and mental health are paramount. Ultimately, if your partner is unwilling to acknowledge your feelings, participate in solutions, or change his behavior after clear communication, then you'll have a clearer picture of whether planning an exit is the right decision for your long-term well-being and that of your child. You deserve a partner, not another child to raise.

At least he wakes up and does night shift mine won’t wake up at all and when I ask him to change a diaper he says his back hurts or he will throw up (when she poops) so I do it ALL unfortunately and he don’t help with house work at all he might cook occasionally
