He actively seeks out the lost, the overlooked, and even those society has deemed unworthy—just like Zacchaeus, the chief tax collector. This resonates so much with the feeling of unworthiness we sometimes carry, perhaps reminiscent of the Prodigal Son's sentiment in Luke 15:19, feeling "no longer worthy to be called your son." But here, Jesus doesn't just pass by Jericho; He stops, looks up, and invites Himself into Zacchaeus's life. This story beautifully illustrates that grace comes first. Zacchaeus's initial act was curiosity, climbing that sycamore tree, a humble and almost childlike act. Jesus’s response wasn't a demand for repentance, but an invitation: "Zacchaeus, hurry and come down, for I must stay at your house today." This personal invitation, born of grace, is what truly opened Zacchaeus's heart. It shows me that our journey with God often begins not with our perfect actions, but with His relentless pursuit and welcoming love. The genuine repentance that followed in Zacchaeus’s life is truly inspiring. He didn't just feel bad; he took immediate, tangible action, promising to give half his possessions to the poor and repay anyone he had cheated fourfold.
