My roommate and I made some lizards to decorate our apartment with!! Cute right 😎
You know that feeling when you want to add a splash of personality to your space without breaking the bank? My roommate and I totally get it! That's exactly how we ended up diving into the wonderful world of paper mache to create some truly unique decor pieces for our apartment. We were looking for something fun, colorful, and a little quirky, and making these adorable paper mache lizards turned out to be the perfect creative adventure. Thinking of trying this yourself? It’s surprisingly simple! Here’s what we gathered for our lizard paper craft project: newspaper (lots of it!), white glue (PVA glue works best), water, a bowl for mixing, masking tape, wire or cardboard for a basic frame (optional, but helps with shape), and finally, paints and brushes for decorating. We also kept an inspiration image of a real blue and orange lizard handy, which really helped guide our color choices and dot patterns later on. First, we sketched out our lizard shapes. Don’t worry about perfection; paper mache is very forgiving! We crumpled newspaper to form the basic body, head, and tail, securing it with masking tape. This is where you can get creative with different lizard shapes – maybe a gecko, a chameleon paper mache, or a friendly dragon! Once the base was ready, we prepared our paper mache paste by mixing about two parts glue to one part water. Then, it was time for the messy fun! We tore newspaper into strips, dipped each strip into the paste, and carefully applied it to our lizard forms, smoothing out any bubbles. We usually did about 3-4 layers, letting each layer dry completely before adding the next. Patience is key here, but it's totally worth it for a sturdy finish. The best part, hands down, was painting! This is where our colorful paper mache lizards truly came to life. One of ours ended up being a vibrant blue with orange and yellow/white dots, just like that inspiration image we loved. The other became a cool multi-colored with black dots abstract creation. We used acrylic paints, which dry quickly and give a great finish. Don't forget the details! Adding eyes really brings out their personality. We even experimented with different patterns and textures. This part is fantastic for lizard art for kids – they can go wild with colors and designs! If you’re thinking of tackling a lizard project like this, here are a few tips: work in a well-ventilated area, cover your workspace (it can get messy!), and don't be afraid to experiment with different forms and colors. These paper lizards aren't just decorations; they're conversation starters and a testament to a fun afternoon spent crafting. They make surprisingly sturdy and charming apartment decor. This is definitely one of those lizard crafts we'll be doing again soon – maybe next time we'll try making bigger ones or even paper mache masks! It’s such a rewarding way to add a personal, artistic touch to your home.
