I’ve struggled with agoraphobia on and off for years

Unfortunately with medication and years of therapy. Ive made little to no progress. I feel like I’m drowning inside.

7/19 Edited to

... Read moreLiving with agoraphobia can feel like an endless battle, especially when progress stalls despite ongoing treatments. From personal experience, I’ve noticed how external events like the COVID-19 pandemic can unexpectedly deepen the feeling of being trapped. The pandemic forced many into isolation, which for someone with agoraphobia, can intensify the fear of leaving the house afterwards. One key realization over the years is that recovery is rarely linear. Some days feel like a step forward, others like being completely stuck. Therapy and medication form the cornerstone of managing symptoms, but they do not guarantee rapid improvement. Patience and self-compassion become crucial in this process. Additionally, small, consistent efforts to step outside—even for brief moments—start to chip away at the walls built by agoraphobia. Setting manageable goals such as walking to the end of the driveway or sitting on the porch can help rebuild confidence gradually. Support from understanding friends or family also makes a vital difference. Sharing struggles openly has relieved the burden of isolation and created accountability to keep trying. Lastly, mindfulness techniques and grounding exercises have been helpful in coping with the overwhelming feelings of drowning that often accompany agoraphobia. They provide moments of calm to regain control when anxiety peaks. While living like trapped in 2020 is a painful reality for many post-pandemic, taking incremental steps toward freedom, celebrating small wins, and seeking personalized coping strategies can slowly open up the world again.
