So you got a camera, what now?

A crash course on how to use your digital camera!

(I’m using a canon rebel t6, camera looks and functions will slightly vary between models and brands)

Mode dial: This is has many different settings on it like manual, which is the setting I use for the rest of the course. But there are also setting such as portrait, landscape, motion, etc. You don’t have to use the setting for the action, i.e. use portraits for a portraits, it just can help when you’re starting to learn photography.

Shutter speed: The bigger (1”, 1/40) the number the slower the shutter speed, the more light that will be allowed in, the brighter your photo will be. The smaller (1/6000) the number the faster your shutter speed will be, the darker your photo will be.

Aperture: The smaller the number the bigger the shutter opening, the more light that will be allowed in. The bigger the number the smaller the shutter opening will be, the less light allowed in. Also, the smaller the number the shallower depth of field, just like the bigger the number the wider the depth of field. (Depth of field is what is in focus on the image. If the subject is in focus and the background is blurry you have a shallow depth of field, if the subject and background are in focus you have a wide depth of field.)

ISO: ISO is how sensitive your camera is to light. The bigger the number the more sensitive the camera is to light, the smaller the number the less sensitive the camera is to light. However the bigger the number, the more grainy your image will be, the more “noise” it will have.

Light Meter: You light meter is there to help you get the proper exposure on your image. You want to stay at 0, the further left you go (into negatives) the more underexposed your image will be, the further right you go (into the positives) the more overexposed your image will be. Of course there are times when you purposely under or overexpose your image to get the look you want.

The rest is kind of self explanatory with the photos but please feel free to ask any questions! There are no dumb questions!

Happy Photographing 📸

... Read moreHey fellow photography enthusiasts! So you’ve got your Canon Rebel T6 (or a similar Canon DSLR) and you’ve learned the basics of shutter speed, aperture, and ISO from the main guide. That's a fantastic start! But getting your camera set up and understanding all its functions often involve more than just understanding the exposure triangle. Let me share some more practical tips based on my own journey. First off, let’s talk about getting started. Before you even think about shooting, ensure your battery is charged and an SD card is inserted. You'd be surprised how many times that's the first hurdle! Once powered on, your camera's rear screen is your command center. Get comfortable navigating the menu button to adjust various settings. Don't be afraid to press buttons like the playback button to review your shots or the trash button to delete mistakes (we all make them!). The directional buttons are your best friends for moving through menus and images. Now, about that mode dial—it’s more than just M for Manual! When I was starting out, I relied a lot on the scene modes. For instance, if I was shooting a friend's portrait, I'd twist the mode dial to the portrait icon. The camera automatically optimizes settings for a blurred background, which is perfect for isolating your subject. Similarly, for landscapes, the landscape mode broadens the depth of field, keeping everything sharp. Don't feel pressured to jump straight into Manual if you're not ready; these modes are excellent learning tools to see how your camera handles different scenarios. Let's dive a bit deeper into picture quality, a common concern for new photographers. You've heard about shutter speed, aperture, and ISO. Here’s how I think about them to get better results: Sharpness with Shutter Speed: If your photos are coming out blurry, especially when shooting moving subjects or in low light, your shutter speed might be too slow. Try increasing it (e.g., from 1/60 to 1/250 or faster). This freezes motion better. Remember, for handheld shots, a good rule of thumb is to keep your shutter speed at least 1 divided by your lens's focal length (e.g., 1/50th for a 50mm lens). Depth and Light with Aperture: Want that creamy bokeh (blurry background)? Use a wider aperture (smaller f-number like f/1.8 or f/2.8). If you need everything in focus, like a group photo or a landscape, use a narrower aperture (larger f-number like f/8 or f/11). Managing Grain with ISO: While a higher ISO helps in dark situations, it also introduces "noise" or grain, affecting your picture quality. My personal goal is always to keep ISO as low as possible, usually 100 or 200, and only increase it when absolutely necessary. It's a balance: better a slightly grainy photo than a completely dark or blurry one! Finally, let's touch on focusing. Your camera likely has an AF/MF switch on the lens. AF stands for Autofocus, and MF is Manual Focus. For most everyday shots, Autofocus is incredibly convenient. But when you're shooting something very specific, like a tiny flower up close, or in tricky lighting conditions, switching to MF gives you precise control. I often use MF for macro photography or when shooting through obstacles. And a quick note on lenses: your lens release button is how you detach your lens. Always be careful when your lens is off, as the camera's mirror and sensor are exposed and vulnerable to dust. Aligning the white square markers helps you attach it correctly and avoid damage. Remember, photography is a journey of continuous learning and experimenting. Don't be afraid to try different settings and see what works best for you and your Canon camera! Happy snapping!

what CAMERA SETTINGS really matter for BEGINNERS
Let’s talk about ISO—aka your camera’s sensitivity to light. Think of ISO like your camera’s “night vision.” The lower the number (like ISO 100), the less sensitive your camera is to light—perfect for bright, sunny days. The higher the number (like ISO 1600 or more), the more light your camera p
