my experience so-far in college ✏️🎓

2024/9/7 Edited to

... Read moreTaking a gap semester was one of the best decisions I made, but let me tell you, it wasn't always sunshine and selfies! While the original article touched on the amazing opportunities I found, like focusing on my photography career and traveling, there were definitely some 'cons' I faced, and honestly, dealing with homesickness was a big one. When you're used to the routine of school and surrounded by friends, stepping away can feel incredibly liberating at first. But after the initial excitement wears off, that familiar ache of missing your family, friends, and even your old dorm room can creep in. I remember feeling a strong pull towards home, especially during quiet evenings. It's a common challenge for many on a gap semester, whether you're traveling, volunteering, or just working to save up. That 'no motivation for college' feeling can sometimes translate into a lack of motivation for everything if you don't actively counter it. So, how did I deal with homesickness and other gap semester hurdles? Firstly, I made sure to stay connected. Regular video calls with family and friends became a lifeline. It felt good to share my new experiences, even the challenging ones, and hear about what they were up to. Secondly, I tried to create a sense of 'home' wherever I was. That meant personalizing my temporary spaces, whether it was a rented room or a hostel. Having a favorite book, a comfort blanket, or even just a familiar playlist helped a lot. Another crucial step was immersing myself in my new environment. Instead of dwelling on what I was missing, I actively sought out new experiences. For example, when I was working to make some money, I made an effort to connect with my colleagues outside of work. Exploring local cafes, parks, and hidden gems also gave me a sense of belonging. Finding local groups or classes related to my interests, like photography or hiking, helped me meet new people and build a new support system. It’s important not to isolate yourself, even if it feels easier sometimes. Beyond homesickness, the 'cons' of a gap semester included managing finances – that 'working' to need money part is very real! – and sometimes feeling a bit out of sync with my college friends who were still on their academic path. There were moments of self-doubt, wondering if I was doing the right thing. But facing these challenges head-on taught me so much about resilience, independence, and truly understanding what I wanted from my college journey. It really solidified my decision to pursue things I love, even if it meant a different path for a while. If you're considering a gap semester, be prepared for both the incredible highs and the very real lows, but know that navigating them makes the experience even more rewarding.

I definitely stand on college isn’t for everyone but the class they offer towards photography (if ur school have it) and the clubs, events, and on campus jobs can be a good way to network and get more experience and job opportunities (on campus) . I’m realizing that now as a media/film student.
