My experience as a college athlete

I always have people asking me about my experience on a college level team, so I wanted to share a bit about my personal experience.

I would say if you are considering being on a team and continuing things in college the biggest thing you are probably thinking about is the time commitment. It is a lot and it is consistently a lot.

For me, the benefits outweigh the possible challenges, and I am so thankful I have had my team throughout my school experience!

I love the element of community I have gotten through the team, the memories I have made and the family I have received throughout being a college athlete.

I would say if you have the opportunity, do it!!

... Read moreIt's true, one of the first questions I always get about being a college athlete is, 'How do you even have time for anything else, especially studying?!' And honestly, it's a valid question. The time commitment is intense, and juggling practices, games, travel, and a full academic load feels like a constant marathon. But from my experience, it's absolutely doable, and incredibly rewarding if you approach it strategically. The secret? Mastering time management. This isn't just a buzzword; it's survival. Early on, I realized I needed a system. My planner became my best friend. Every Sunday, I'd map out my entire week: practice times, lift sessions, class schedule, and crucially, dedicated study blocks. I learned to treat study time like an appointment I couldn't miss, just like practice. Even if it was just an hour between classes or late at night after a game, those small, consistent efforts added up. Prioritization is another huge piece of the puzzle. Not every assignment carries the same weight, and sometimes you have to make tough choices about what needs immediate attention. I got comfortable communicating with my professors about upcoming travel or heavy periods of competition. Most professors are understanding if you proactively reach out and show you’re committed to your studies. Don't be afraid to utilize academic support resources – many universities offer specialized tutoring or academic advising for athletes, which can be a lifesaver. I found that having someone to help me break down complex topics or review papers made a massive difference. Studying on the road also became a skill. Long bus rides or flights were prime opportunities to catch up on readings or work on assignments. It wasn't always glamorous, sometimes I was cramming in the hotel lobby, but every little bit counted. It's all part of pushing physical limits and mental ones. Beyond just the mechanics of managing time, the discipline you gain as an athlete actually translates directly into your academic life. That drive to perform well on the field or court extends to the classroom. You learn resilience, how to work under pressure, and the importance of consistency – all vital for academic success. And let's not forget the incredible support system. While balancing everything can feel isolating at times, my team truly became my community and family. We'd often study together on trips, share notes, or just offer encouragement when someone was feeling overwhelmed. Making friends and memories isn't just about fun; it’s about having a network that understands your unique challenges and celebrates your successes, both athletic and academic. So, if you're considering being a college athlete and worried about the 'studying' part, know that it demands a lot, but it also equips you with invaluable skills. It's about finding your rhythm, being disciplined, and leveraging your support system. It's a challenging journey, but the personal growth and the experiences you gain are truly unparalleled.
