Do your research with any breeder! Ask to video chat if you’re not sure if they’re legit. If they can’t show you the animal in a video chat than they’re most likely hiding something or they’re a scammer #mainecoon #mainecooncat #catsoftiktok #breeder #kitten #catbreeder #mainecoonbreeder

... Read moreFinding a reputable Maine Coon breeder can feel like a huge task, right? Especially when you hear so many stories about scams! My own journey to finding my beloved Maine Coon kitties taught me so much about what to look for, and what red flags to absolutely run from. The original post mentioned video calls – and honestly, that's such a crucial first step. If a breeder hesitates or flat-out refuses a video chat where you can see the kittens and their environment, consider that a major warning sign. They might be hiding something, or worse, they might not even have the kittens they're advertising. But let's be real, a video chat is just the beginning! To truly verify a Maine Coon breeder, you need to dig deeper. One huge red flag I learned about from others (and even saw echoed in some online discussions) is pricing. I’ve seen so many posts about 'deals' on Maine Coons, with prices ranging from an unbelievably low $500 to $1500. This is often the first giveaway for a scammer! The truth about the cost of a healthy, well-bred Maine Coon cat is that they are a significant investment. Reputable breeders spend a lot on health testing the parents for genetic conditions common in the breed (like HCM, HD, SMA), high-quality food, vet care, and proper socialization. Plus, cats sold for breeding purposes cost even more than those sold as pets, reflecting the immense care and genetic planning involved. So, beyond price, what else can you do? 1. Ask for Health Clearances and Guarantees: A legitimate Maine Coon breeder will readily provide documentation for health screenings of the parent cats. This includes genetic tests and OFA certifications for hips. They should also offer a health guarantee for their kittens. If they brush off your questions or say 'my cats are healthy, I don't test,' walk away. 2. Request References: Don't be shy! Ask for references from previous buyers. A good breeder will be happy to connect you with families who have adopted their kittens. Check online reviews and breed-specific forums too – often you can find candid feedback there. 3. Review the Contract: A comprehensive contract is a must. It should outline everything from health guarantees, spay/neuter agreements (most pet kittens are sold with a spay/neuter clause), return policies, and what happens if the kitten develops a genetic issue. Read every line carefully! 4. Observe Their Communication: How responsive are they? Are they willing to answer all your questions, even the tough ones? A reputable breeder is passionate about their cats and will be eager to educate you. Someone who is vague, pushy, or avoids direct questions is a huge red flag. 5. Visit, If Possible: If geographically feasible, ask to visit their cattery in person. This allows you to see the living conditions of the cats, interact with the parent animals, and observe the kittens' temperament and socialization firsthand. If visits are denied without a very good reason (like biosecurity protocols, which are understandable but should be explained), be cautious. 6. Inquire About Socialization: How are the kittens raised? Are they exposed to household noises, children, and other pets? Well-socialized kittens make for well-adjusted adult cats. A good breeder invests time in this crucial developmental stage. Remember, choosing a Maine Coon is a long-term commitment. Taking the time to thoroughly verify your breeder is not just about protecting your wallet from scammers; it's about ensuring you bring home a healthy, happy, and well-adjusted companion who will be a joy for years to come. Trust your gut, and don't rush the process!
