This year I’ve had @makebigtalk conversations with survivors of the LA fires, Texas floods, and Hurricane Helene. I’ve seen that disasters can bring out the best in humanity - from neighbors helping neighbors to people donating to those they’ve never met who live across the world from them! ❣️

I’ve also seen how important it is to be ready for the unexpected. Nearly 1 in 5 Americans alone had to evacuate their homes. Let’s be vigilant and support emergency systems and preparedness plans so that when the next disaster strikes, we can be there for ourselves and for each other! 🙌🏽

... Read moreIn the face of natural disasters such as the LA fires, Hurricane Helene, and the Texas floods, I've seen incredible stories that highlight the best of humanity. From neighbors rushing to help each other evacuate safely to strangers donating resources to complete strangers living thousands of miles away, compassion truly shines during these emergencies. One of the most important lessons from these events is how vital it is for every individual and community to have a personal preparedness plan. Nearly one in five Americans had to pack up and leave their homes quickly, often losing cherished belongings and important keepsakes in the process. These situations reveal how unpredictable disasters can be and how being ready is key to safety. Moreover, strong and well-funded emergency systems and responders are crucial to managing these crises effectively. When disaster relief becomes tangled in politics, it can delay aid and harm everyone involved. That’s why supporting and improving emergency response infrastructure benefits us all. I’ve also witnessed people from different backgrounds and political views setting aside their differences to rebuild homes and lives together. This unity shows the power of community and empathy in overcoming adversity. As we face climate change and increasing extreme weather events, being proactive about preparedness is more important than ever. Creating an emergency kit, knowing evacuation routes, and staying informed through official weather alerts can make a big difference in survival and recovery. Together, by choosing community over self-interest and supporting one another, we can protect not only each other but also the future of our planet. Let’s keep sharing stories, offering help, and making big talk about preparedness so when the next disaster strikes, we’re ready to face it with hope and strength.
