I don’t do holidays but I still enjoy the lights

... Read moreIt’s interesting how the holiday season brings out so many different emotions. For me, lately, it's been less about the traditional fanfare and more about finding quiet moments of peace. Like the original post, I often find myself saying, 'I don’t do holidays,' at least not in the way many expect. But that doesn't mean the magic of the season completely passes me by. Quite the opposite, actually. What I’ve discovered is a profound beauty in the simple act of observing. There’s something incredibly serene about walking through a nighttime city street scene, especially when the trees are adorned with colorful lights and illuminated buildings glow softly in the distance. It’s a different kind of celebration, a personal one, where the visual splendor is enough to fill you with a quiet sense of wonder. Spending holidays alone can sometimes carry a stigma, but I’ve learned to truly embrace it. It’s an opportunity for introspection, for recharging, and for discovering joys that don’t rely on external validation. If you're finding yourself in a similar boat, perhaps looking for a different perspective, I've found comfort in many wise words from others. Here are a few quotes about spending holidays alone that have resonated deeply with me, offering a sense of companionship in solitude: 'Solitude is not the absence of company, but the moment when our soul is free to speak to us and help us decide what to do with our life.' – Paulo Coelho. This one always reminds me that being alone isn't about being lonely, but about connecting with myself. 'The best way to get something done is to begin.' – Unknown. For me, this applies to happiness. Sometimes, finding joy when alone during holidays means starting small, like appreciating a perfectly lit street lamp or a beautiful display. 'To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment.' – Ralph Waldo Emerson. This speaks to the freedom of forging your own holiday path, free from societal expectations. These quotes aren't just words; they’re gentle reminders that our experience of the holidays is personal and valid, whether it involves grand gatherings or quiet contemplation. The beauty of the colorful lights on the trees, the subtle glow from a prominent street lamp, or the intricate patterns on a large building can become your own festive moments. If you're spending holidays alone, I encourage you to seek out your own small moments of beauty. Maybe it’s a quiet walk to admire the vibrant urban light display, enjoying a warm drink while watching the city twinkle, or simply allowing yourself the space to feel whatever you feel without judgment. There's a special kind of comfort in creating your own traditions, even if that tradition is simply enjoying the peaceful glow of illuminated buildings against the night sky.
