Getting ready for Star Wars day
I'm getting ready for Star Wars Day (May the Fouth) and carving another Millennium Falcon tray out of padauk.
I start with a 1/4" roughing bit, move to a 1/32" diameter tapered ball nose for the finishing pass, and then a 1/4" downcutting bit for the final outline profile pass.

As an avid CNC enthusiast and Star Wars fan, I find that combining these passions into a project like this Millennium Falcon tray is incredibly rewarding. Padauk wood is an excellent choice because of its vibrant reddish hue and durability, making it perfect for intricate carving and a striking finished piece. When I approached this project, my workflow was crucial to achieving sharp details. Starting with a 1/4" roughing bit helped quickly remove large areas of excess wood. Switching to the 1/32" diameter tapered ball nose bit for the finishing pass allowed me to capture the fine curves and recessed details that bring the Millennium Falcon’s design to life. Finally, I used a 1/4" downcutting bit to cleanly define the outer edges without causing splintering. Investing time in selecting the right CNC bits and running multiple passes at the correct speeds ensures minimal tear-out and a smooth surface, which is essential for a professional-looking final product. After carving, a light sanding and application of a finish like tung oil enhances the padauk’s natural color and adds protection. If you’re considering a similar project, I highly recommend using a quality CNC machine like the Onefinity, which offers reliable precision at an accessible price. Whether you’re an experienced woodworker or just starting out with CNC carving, tackling themed projects like this makes crafting even more enjoyable.
