income you need to live comfortably in each state

I love data and the impact it shows on our everyday life.

This graph really spoke to me on how there is an affordability crisis going on in the US right now. Only 12% of families are living comfortably and the other 88% are barely making it. I also post these things to bring awareness and so others don’t feel alone as I know it’s tough times for most of us 🥺 but we can make it through together by sharing knowledge and helping when we can 🫶🏻

... Read moreWow, seeing those numbers for what it takes to live comfortably in *each state*, especially from Mississippi's $178K up to Massachusetts's whopping $301K for a family of four, really puts things into perspective. This data, current as of early 2024, highlights a truth many of us feel daily: financial comfort is increasingly out of reach for a significant portion of the population. The definition of 'comfortable' often revolves around a '50/30/20 budget' for *two working adults with two children*. This means 50% of your income goes to needs (housing, food, transportation), 30% to wants (entertainment, dining out), and 20% to savings and debt repayment. When you look at the required income to meet this standard – which can be well over $200,000 in many states – it's clear why only a small percentage of US households earn $200,000 or more annually. It's a stark reminder that while some families are thriving, the vast majority are feeling the pinch and striving to meet these demanding financial benchmarks. So, if your current salary isn't quite hitting that comfortable income mark for your state, what can you do? For me, it starts with getting really honest about where every dollar goes. Budgeting apps are a lifesaver, helping to track spending and identify areas where cuts can be made. Sometimes, even small adjustments can free up more money for savings or necessities. I've also seen friends successfully pick up side hustles – whether it's freelancing, selling crafts online, or even driving for a delivery service – to bridge that gap. Every little bit helps when you're trying to achieve financial security and improve your family's financial situation. Beyond the numbers, the mental load of financial stress is real. Knowing that the 'salary needed to live comfortably' is so high in your area can be disheartening. But remember, you're not alone. It's important to focus on what's within your control. Could a slightly smaller place make a big difference in your housing costs? Are there ways to reduce your grocery bill through meal planning and bulk buying? Thinking about long-term growth, investing in your skills through professional development or online courses can open doors to higher-paying roles, slowly helping you inch closer to those comfortable income benchmarks. It's a long game, but a worthwhile one. It's tough out there, but by understanding these numbers and sharing our tips on how to manage finances, we can navigate this affordability crisis together. Let's keep learning and growing!
