OKAY SO I know this is different from my usual content but it’s been weighing on me a lot lately and I wanted to see if there’s anyone else out there that needs it.
With Easter coming up felt like now is a good time! Were you raised in religion? What was it like for you?
Growing up with religion can deeply shape one’s worldview and emotional health. For many, faith is a source of comfort and connection, but for others, it can carry pain and trauma. I’ve found that being honest about these experiences—whether positive or difficult—is crucial for healing and growth. During my own journey around faith, I encountered a mix of feelings: love, confusion, and sometimes frustration. It’s common to experience cognitive dissonance when beliefs once held start to clash with intellectual honesty or personal values. This is a natural part of deconstructing faith, a process many go through as they question, explore, and redefine what spirituality means to them. What helped most for me was finding a community that embraces questioning and healing without judgment. Some groups create safe, inclusive spaces for people dealing with religious trauma or moving away from traditional faith structures. These spaces provide support and understanding, crucial when feeling isolated by others’ expectations. One important thing I learned is that leaving a religious community doesn’t mean losing your entire sense of belonging or identity. It can open the door to discovering new values, beliefs, or ways of being that better align with who you truly are. It takes courage to face the grief of leaving but embracing authenticity is worth the effort. If you’ve been hurt by religion or the church, know that you’re not alone. Many have faced similar struggles and found paths to peace and purpose beyond the pain. This Easter season—a time often associated with renewal and hope—might be a fitting moment to reflect on your spiritual journey, whatever form it takes, and to seek out compassionate connections that support your healing and growth journey.
