A tiny something I’ve been working on in the downtime of Chisme’s recovery. Kirby. Kirby hates a van crate. He is absolutely not a dog you can physically force with compliance- he will get shiddy real fast. Big shiddy.

Kirby is a LOT of dog, a whole lot. Way more than I need 😂 but in order for him to find his people, Kirby needs to get through his crate issues. He’s clean, quiet, and not troublesome once inside a crate… however- it’s getting him IN the crate that can be a bit sketchy. He’s so immensely intelligent that it can become problematic.

Anyway, here’s transparency. Dogs aren’t perfect.

Kirby’s going to learn that a whole world of fun is out there waiting on him once he gets in the sketchy box of shame.

4/5 Edited to

... Read moreCrate training can be a real challenge, especially with a smart and strong-willed dog like Kirby. From my own experience and many pet owners’ stories, forcing a dog into a crate often backfires. It leads to resistance and anxiety rather than cooperation. Instead, creating a positive association with the crate is key. One method that has helped is gradually introducing the crate as a comfortable, rewarding space. Placing tasty treats, favorite toys, and cozy bedding inside encourages voluntary entry. Letting your dog explore the crate without pressure helps reduce the fear around it. For a dog that is especially clever, like Kirby, this process can take time and patience. I’ve also learned that consistency is important. Crate training sessions should be short at first, paired with praise when your dog goes in on their own. Over time, lengthening the crate time helps the dog adjust. Using commands gently and avoiding force prevents negative associations. Interestingly, the crate can become a place of safety and calm once the dog understands it’s not a punishment. For example, during car trips, a crate can protect a dog while also providing them a familiar refuge in a changing environment, as seen in many Ruffland Kennels’ training tips. Throughout this training, transparency about setbacks and successes matters. Dogs aren’t perfect and can have 'big shiddies' like Kirby, but with thoughtful techniques and care, overcoming crate anxiety is definitely achievable. Many dog owners can relate to this journey, creating a special bond as their pet learns the crate is a gateway to fun adventures rather than something to fear.
