This has been a hard month… what started as mystery lameness in his left hind leg rapidly became something much more on Saturday. We’re waiting on labwork to come back and hopefully we find out what’s going on with my old man.
He’s been with me since the day he was born 22 years ago…
-we have been treating for a potential abscess in his left hind leg- only for him to become wobbly , severely lame in all four feet, disoriented and displaying bizarre behaviors over the weekend (teeth grinding, yawing his mouth, inability to crib or grasp things with his teeth, calling out to his brother in the wrong direction, standing with his neck bent/ turned away from me/locked in, clenching belly muscles, holding his right hind foot up, etc)
Having cared for older horses myself, I understand how distressing sudden health changes can be, especially when symptoms progress quickly and are hard to diagnose. Lameness in one leg that expands to multiple limbs often indicates more serious issues like infections or neurological disorders. In my experience, thorough veterinary assessment including labwork is crucial to pinpoint the cause and guide treatment. It’s important to monitor behavioral changes alongside physical symptoms. The described signs—teeth grinding, disorientation, muscle clenching, and altered posture—can suggest pain, neurological involvement, or systemic infection. I found that documenting these behaviors in detail helps vets make informed decisions and adjust care plans accordingly. Treating a potential abscess involves careful wound management, anti-inflammatory medications, and sometimes antibiotics. However, when neurological signs appear, treatments may need to expand to address possible brain or spinal cord involvement. Providing comfort through appropriate stall rest, a clean environment, and gentle handling can reduce stress for an aging horse facing complex health challenges. The emotional toll of seeing a beloved long-term companion struggle is significant; seeking support from equine communities or professionals can be invaluable. In all, patience and vigilance are key. Waiting on diagnostic results can be nerve-wracking, but it’s a critical step to ensure the best possible outcome for an old friend who has been by your side for decades.
