Hey fellow Procreate artists! Ever been there, meticulously picking out the perfect shades for your masterpiece, only to go back to your color palette and find your recent 'Color History' completely empty or just not updating? Ugh, it's so frustrating when Procreate seems to forget all those gorgeous hues you just used! I've definitely had my moments of panic, wondering if I did something wrong. But don't worry, you're not alone, and there are usually simple fixes! First off, let's quickly recap what Procreate's 'Color History' actually is. It's that super handy row of recently used colors that pops up in your Color Panel. It's designed to make it super easy to jump back to a shade you just used without having to eyedrop it again or remember its exact hex code. It’s a real time-saver, especially when you're blending or refining details. So, why might your 'Color History' not be showing up or acting weird? From my own experience and chatting with other artists, here are some common culprits: Switching Documents or Palettes: This is a big one! Procreate’s color history is usually tied to the current document you’re working on. If you jump to another canvas or switch to a different custom color palette, your history might appear empty or refresh to reflect the new context. Always double-check which document you have open. Also, if you’ve recently tried to 'Import' a new palette, sometimes that can temporarily confuse the history display. Not Actively Selecting Colors: Sometimes, if you're just eyedropping colors directly from your canvas without actually applying them, they might not register in the history. Make sure you're actively painting or filling with a color for it to be added to your recent picks. Using the 'Current Layer' or merging layers might also influence how colors are perceived and stored in history, especially if transparency or blend modes are involved. App Glitches or Updates: Like any software, Procreate can have its little quirks. Sometimes a simple app restart or even restarting your iPad can clear up minor display bugs causing your history to not show. After major Procreate updates, sometimes UI elements shift, so make sure you're looking in the right place for the history row in your Color Panel (the 'Color Bar' section). You might even check if any 'Fiters' (filters) you've applied are causing display issues within the app itself, though this is less common for history. Full History or Corrupted Preferences: While less common, if you've been doing a ton of color picking across many documents, your history might just get a bit overwhelmed. Or, in rare cases, Procreate’s preference files can get a little wonky. Resetting Procreate’s preferences (without losing your art!) or, as a last resort, reinstalling the app (after backing up everything, of course!) can sometimes fix deeper issues. My quick tips if your history is gone: Don't panic! Your colors aren't truly lost. Manual Palette Save: If you have a critical color, immediately drag it onto a custom palette to save it permanently. This is a lifesaver! Check Different Color Modes: Are you in Disc, Classic, Harmony, Value, or Palettes? Sometimes switching modes can refresh the display. Inspect Your Canvas: Use the eyedropper tool to re-select any color you need from your artwork. Remember, Procreate is an amazing tool, and these little hiccups are usually just minor speed bumps. By understanding how the 'Color History' works and knowing these troubleshooting steps, you'll be back to creating vibrant art in no time, with all your favorite colors right at your fingertips!
