Painting birds has always been a fulfilling yet challenging endeavor. Over time, I've learned that consistent progress—whether fast or slow—is what truly matters. When I first started, painting 70 birds by this time last year seemed like a huge achievement, but now reaching a total count of 301/2268 shows how perseverance pays off. Incorporating species like the Common Myna, LeConte’s Thrasher, and Bananaquit into my artwork has broadened my understanding of bird diversity and added new textures and colors to my palette. These birds each have unique features that make them exciting subjects to capture in watercolor. For example, the Common Myna's glossy plumage and sharp markings challenge me to get the details just right, while the Bananaquit’s bright yellow hues demand vibrant and precise brushwork. Using quality materials is also an important part of my process. I've found that premium watercolor paper, such as PREMIER BLICK 10x14, enhances the vibrancy and durability of the paintings. The texture of this paper allows the paint to flow smoothly yet stay in place, which is essential for capturing feather details.
