Backyard Garden Update! Part 1
It’s been a while and a lot has grown!
My husband desperately wanted to try growing our own watermelons this year so we grabbed a couple of starts from our local Tractor Supply and it’s done sooo well! We have yet to get a little melon to grow past the size of a quarter (too much rain recently) but we’re keeping our fingers crossed as we start to cross into fall!
My husband also planted a bunch of mint in a bed that we didn’t really end up doing much with and didn’t tell me until it was all pretty tall 😬. If you don’t know, mint takes over! It’s recommended to plant in a pot, not in the ground. So that’ll be something to keep an eye on 😅.
And my squash/zucchini has been doing very well! Every time we got a good day of rain I’d go out to check everything and those two especially would have shot up! I think we’re getting to the end of their season but it’s been so fun to watch it grow!
My tomatoes have done very well too! Still lots of green tomatoes that I’m waiting to see some color in before I pick them but I see some homemade jarred salsa and tomato sauce in my future!
We’re also getting some flowers!! I didn’t put much effort into flowers other than marigolds and sunflowers for their companion plant qualities but I’m really loving seeing some beauty in my garden! Definitely something to look more into for next year!
The sweet potato bloom (slide 9) was a definite surprise. I had no idea sweet potatoes had blooms! I looked it up and it said it’s a really good sign that the plant is doing very well!
I wouldn’t say our first year doing this was a total success. We have a couple of mostly empty boxes because things just didn’t quite take off or were attacked by pests (come back for part 2 on that 😬). But it been a learning experience and I already have plans for next spring!
