Cellulitis

The last few days have been terrifying. What started as severe pain and redness in my mom’s leg diagnosed as a fungal rash progressed into extensive cellulitis throughout her thigh. Her CT scan showed diffuse subcutaneous edema with concern for developing phlegmonous changes/possible abscess formation in the soft tissue.

She’s currently hospitalized on multiple IV antibiotics, oxygen, morphine for severe pain, and under close monitoring. Her labs have also shown acute kidney stress with elevated creatinine and BUN levels along with decreased kidney function (eGFR 38), likely from the infection and strain on her body.

Between this, pneumonia, diabetes, and being medically fragile already, her body is fighting hard right now. Watching someone you love moan in pain while you wait and pray for improvement is something I wouldn’t wish on anyone. We’re just taking it hour by hour and hoping the antibiotics start winning this fight soon. #cellulitis #skininfection #prayers

... Read moreFrom personal experience, managing cellulitis effectively requires early diagnosis and prompt treatment with appropriate antibiotics. In my case, observing the progression from what seemed like a simple skin rash to extensive swelling and pain underscored how quickly cellulitis can escalate into a serious infection. Hospitalization became necessary due to the involvement of deep soft tissues, as revealed by imaging that showed diffuse subcutaneous edema and potential abscess formation. Throughout the treatment journey, the use of intravenous antibiotics was critical in controlling the infection. Close monitoring of kidney function was equally important, as severe infections and the medications used can strain the kidneys and lead to elevated creatinine and blood urea nitrogen (BUN) levels. Supportive care such as oxygen therapy and pain management with medications like morphine helped maintain comfort during the tough phases of recovery. Patients with underlying conditions such as diabetes and pneumonia face additional challenges when fighting cellulitis. These comorbidities can compromise the immune response, making infection control slower and requiring vigilant care. The psychological toll of witnessing loved ones in pain and uncertainty requires immense emotional strength and patience. If you or someone you care about is dealing with cellulitis, monitoring early signs like redness, swelling, and severe pain is vital. Do not hesitate to seek medical attention promptly. Treatment durations may extend over several days with daily assessment to evaluate antibiotic effectiveness and detect complications early, such as phlegmonous changes or abscess needing drainage. Sharing this experience aims to raise awareness about the seriousness of cellulitis and the importance of comprehensive medical care. Stay attentive to changes in skin condition and systemic symptoms like fever, and ensure close follow-up with healthcare providers. With timely intervention and sustained treatment, recovery is possible, even in complex cases involving extensive tissue infection and compromised health conditions.
