If you're like me and curious about 'yoga in Mandarin,' let me share some of what I've learned. The most fundamental term you'll want to know is, of course, 'yoga' itself. In Mandarin, it's 瑜伽 (yújiā). The pronunciation is quite similar to English, making it an easy one to remember right off the bat! Beyond just the word 'yoga,' there are so many other useful phrases. For instance, when you're in a class, you'll often hear instructions like inhale and exhale. In Mandarin, these are 吸气 (xīqì) for 'inhale' and 呼气 (hūqì) for 'exhale.' Understanding these basic commands really helps you follow along, even if you don't grasp every single word. You might also hear terms like 体式 (tǐshì) which means 'pose' or 'asana.' Some common poses have direct translations too: Warrior Pose is 战士式 (zhànshì shì), Downward-Facing Dog is 下犬式 (xiàquǎn shì), and Child's Pose is 儿童式 (értóng shì). When the instructor says 放松 (fàngsōng), they mean 'relax,' and 伸展 (shēnzhǎn) means 'stretch.' Practicing yoga with Mandarin instructions has surprisingly enhanced my focus. Trying to understand new vocabulary while holding a pose forces me to be more present and less distracted by internal chatter.
