How to Help Someone Having a Panic Attack

4/1 Edited to

... Read moreHaving personally assisted a close friend during several panic attacks, I found that staying calm and maintaining a reassuring presence can drastically ease their distress. The simple act of speaking softly—saying things like "I am here" and "You are safe"—can provide much-needed comfort. One technique that worked well was guiding their breathing closely: inhaling for 4 seconds, holding for 4, and exhaling for 4 helps to regulate the nervous system. Grounding exercises also proved invaluable. Encouraging them to identify 5 things they see, 4 things they hear, and 3 things they feel redirected their focus away from panic sensations. Applying cold stimulation, such as holding ice or splashing cold water on the face or wrists, helped in activating the parasympathetic nervous system, calming their body. These strategies, combined with patience and empathy, create a safe space enabling someone to regain control. Every panic attack and individual is unique, so adapting these methods to the situation and remaining supportive is essential. Over time, practicing these techniques not only aids others but also equips you with knowledge should you ever face a panic attack yourself.
