WHY I HAVE REGRETS ABOUT GETTING MY MASTERS

I think the biggest thing I believed that with more education comes more opportunities and financial benefits. No matter where and what field but in recent years that’s far from the truth🥲.

I was searching for a job for almost 7 months in Grad school. The craziest part about it was that I had the experience due to the way my program was set up.

I also think I could have gone for something else. I picked my area of specialty because I knew I wasn’t going to have debt.

Almost every job wanted to give me the minimum salary because that’s what they deemed best. But let’s be real most minimums don’t even meet current inflation needs. 😒 I feel like my biggest regret is thinking that it’ll be a huge benefit financially. I know so many people who have been working for YEARS and still struggle with upping their salary and it’s not even a reflection of them or their education.

My last regret is the assistantship I chose. If I could go back I would change and it and expand my opportunities because I was let down for 2 years.

... Read moreReading through this, I totally get where you're coming from! It's so easy to fall into the trap of believing a master's degree is a golden ticket to a better life, financial stability, and endless opportunities. But honestly, my own journey (or those of friends I've seen) has shown me that it's just not that simple anymore. Beyond the financial strain and job market struggles, which are huge, there are so many other reasons people end up regretting their master's. One big one is the sheer time commitment and the impact on your personal life. Sacrificing years, often putting your social life and even your mental health on the back burner, only to find the payoff isn't what you expected, can be incredibly draining. I've heard stories of people feeling completely burnt out and isolated, wishing they'd spent that time building practical experience or exploring different career paths. Another common regret I've noticed is a misalignment between the degree and actual career goals. Sometimes, we choose a program based on what sounds good, or what's available, without deeply researching the real-world application of that specific degree. It's easy to get caught up in the academic bubble. Before diving in, it's so important to talk to people actually working in the field you're aiming for. Ask them if their master's helped, or if they wish they'd done something different. Did they feel like they were just checking a box, or did it truly open doors? And let's not forget the pressure to keep up with peers or family expectations. It often feels like the 'next logical step' after undergrad, even if your heart isn't fully in it. This can lead to feeling trapped in a program you don't love, racking up debt for something you're not passionate about, which only amplifies the regret later on. That feeling of 'Did I screw up?' is so real when you realize you've invested so much for a shaky return. If you're currently wrestling with this decision or feeling similar regrets, here are a few things that might help. First, remember that your education is never wasted, even if it didn't pan out exactly as planned. The critical thinking, research skills, and perseverance you gained are invaluable, even if they're applied in unexpected ways. Second, don't be afraid to pivot. Your career path isn't set in stone. Many find success by leveraging their master's in a completely different field, or by combining it with new skills learned through certifications or online courses. Finally, for anyone considering a master's, please do your homework beyond just the university's brochure. Look into alumni testimonials, not just the success stories they highlight, but also the more nuanced experiences. Network aggressively before and during your program. And critically evaluate if the specific skills you'll gain truly align with the job market and your personal aspirations, rather than just chasing a title. It's about finding what genuinely works for *you*, not just following the traditional path. What are your thoughts? Have you experienced similar feelings or found ways to make your master's work for you?

Love this and I’m currently going through the same with having a Master I don’t get me wrong. I’m a big advocate for education, but it has to come with benefits and in this current atmosphere we live in it does not feel like Benefits having more education.

Before pursuing the masters I wish I would have done more research in terms of job listing and pay. I positioned myself to be an IT PM. Luckily, I’m in a position to get experience but the field is competitive and I would have done better getting an associate EN with a masters in project management.
