How to become a freelancer 👩‍💻✨📝

Starting your freelance journey is incredibly exciting, but it also comes with its challenges. Based on my own experience, especially those initial years where I struggled financially, I've learned there are three core pillars you need to build to truly thrive as a freelancer and aim for that 6-figure success. Let's dive into what those steps really include! First, you need a skill that's in demand. This isn't just about being good at something; it's about identifying what problems businesses are actively willing to pay to solve. When I started my freelance journey in 2019 while finishing my master's degree in Berlin, I realized that skills like Social Media Management, Content Creation, and User Generated Content (UGC) were becoming essential for businesses of all sizes. I focused on developing these and then specializing. Don't be afraid to niche down! Instead of being a generalist, becoming an expert in one specific area, like UGC, can make you incredibly valuable. Think about your existing talents, what you enjoy doing, or even what friends and family ask you for help with. Then, research market trends. Are companies looking for web developers, copywriters, virtual assistants, or maybe even consultants in a specific industry? Invest in courses, workshops, or even just practice projects to hone that skill until you're confident in offering it professionally. Second, you must transform yourself into an entrepreneur. This is perhaps the biggest mindset shift. You're no longer just an employee; you're the CEO of your own business. This means taking ownership of everything from finding clients to managing your finances. For me, this shift was crucial after my student visa expired in Europe and I was determined to make freelancing work. It involves learning how to market yourself effectively, whether that's through a strong portfolio, networking, or cold outreach. You need to understand how to price your services, write proposals, and negotiate contracts. It also means being resilient. There will be ups and downs, especially in those initial four years where financial struggles were a real challenge for me. But embracing the entrepreneurial spirit means seeing challenges as opportunities to learn and grow, constantly adapting, and always looking for ways to improve your service offerings and client relationships. This is how I expanded into Consulting, which greatly contributed to achieving a 6-figure income. Finally, you absolutely need to budget for benefits. One of the biggest differences between a traditional job and freelancing is that you're responsible for your own safety net. No employer is paying for your health insurance, retirement contributions, or even your vacation days. This might sound daunting, but it's entirely manageable with smart planning. Start by setting aside a significant portion of every payment for taxes – this is non-negotiable! Research health insurance options for freelancers in your area. Look into setting up a retirement account, like a Roth IRA or SEP IRA, and make consistent contributions. And importantly, factor in 'paid time off' when you set your rates. If you want to take a week off, you need to have saved enough to cover your expenses during that period. This financial discipline is key to creating the flexible and fulfilling freelance life you dream of, free from corporate politics and the worry of unexpected costs. It allows you to build a truly sustainable career.
