History of aprons ✨

The History of 'APRONS'

I don't think our kids know what an apron is. The principle use of Grandma's apron was to protect the dress underneath because she only had a few. It was also because it was easier to wash aprons than dresses and aprons used less material. But along with that, it served as a potholder for removing hot pans from the oven.

It was wonderful for drying children's tears, and ...on occasion was even used for cleaning out dirty ears.

From the chicken coop, the apron was used for carrying eggs, fussy chicks, and sometimes half-hatched eggs to be finished in the warming oven.

When company came, those aprons were ideal hiding places for shy kids..

And when the weather was cold, Grandma wrapped it around her arms.

Those big old aprons wiped many a perspiring brow, bent over the hot wood stove.

Chips and kindling wood were brought into the kitchen in that apron.

From the garden, it carried all sorts of vegetables. After the peas had been shelled, it carried out the hulls.

In the fall, the apron was used to bring in apples that had fallen from the trees.

When unexpected company drove up the road, it was surprising how much furniture that old apron could dust in a matter of seconds.

When dinner was ready, Grandma walked out onto the porch, waved her apron, and the men folk knew it was time to come in from the fields to dinner.

It will be a long time before someone invents something that will replace that 'old-time apron' that served so many purposes.

Send this to those who would know (and love) the story about Grandma's aprons.

REMEMBER:

Grandma used to set her hot baked apple pies on the window sill to cool. Her granddaughters set theirs on the window sill to thaw.

They would go crazy now trying to figure out how many germs were on that apron.

I don't think I ever caught anything from an apron - but love...

... Read moreReading about Grandma's apron really got me thinking about how much practical magic was woven into that simple piece of cloth. My own grandma had one, usually a faded floral pattern, always ready for action. It wasn't just for keeping clothes clean – it was a true multi-tool! It served as an emergency potholder, a makeshift carry-all for garden veggies or even fresh eggs, and a comforting shield for shy kids. It makes you wonder, when did these amazing aprons even come into being? I started digging a bit deeper into the history of aprons, and it's much richer than I ever imagined! While my grandma's apron was all about function, aprons have been around for centuries, evolving with different cultures and purposes. They weren't just invented in one moment; their forms changed over time, from ancient civilizations using them for ceremonial purposes to medieval artisans wearing them for protection. Depending on the era and region, an apron could signify status, trade, or simply practicality. Early aprons were often made from durable materials like linen or wool, meant to withstand daily wear and tear, much like the sturdy apron my grandma relied on. But here's where it gets even more interesting: beyond the purely utilitarian, aprons also became canvases for expression! While my grandma's might have been practical, I've seen images of beautiful, bright-colored aprons that are truly works of art. In many traditional cultures, especially in Eastern Europe or among certain Indigenous groups in North America, aprons are a significant part of traditional dress. They're often adorned with intricate embroidery, vibrant patterns, and rich colors, telling stories or signifying regional identity. These aren't just for cooking; they're worn during celebrations, daily life, and are a symbol of heritage, often passed down through generations. I even stumbled upon some cool facts about aprons in Canadian traditions. While not always a single, specific 'bright-colored apron' tradition, there are many regional Canadian craft traditions where aprons play a role, often made with durable, treated materials designed for specific tasks or as part of ceremonial attire. It's a long-standing tradition in many communities to craft these items with care, making them not just useful but also culturally significant. It just goes to show how something as humble as an apron can carry so much history, utility, and beauty across different lands and times. It makes me appreciate my grandma's simple apron even more, knowing it's part of such a global and enduring legacy!
