✨🦵🏾A Beginner’s Guide To Body Composition Slang📝 ✨

✨ Keep up with all the Gym Bros’ and Muscle Mommy’s conversations with this chest sheet to understanding essential physique and body composition terms. No matter where you are in your journey, remember: Everyone starts somewhere, and asking questions is part of learning! By focusing on body composition instead of just weight, gym-goers can achieve healthier and more sustainable results that align with their fitness goals.

✨ How Body Composition Relates to Getting Toned or Losing Weight:

1️⃣ Getting Toned:

•Toning involves reducing fat mass and building or preserving lean muscle mass. This creates a lean, defined appearance.

•Strength training is key because it helps build muscle, which increases your resting metabolism, meaning you burn more calories even when not exercising.

•A focus on body composition ensures you’re not just losing weight but improving the ratio of muscle to fat.

2️⃣ Losing Weight:

•Weight loss often involves losing both fat and muscle, but focusing on body composition helps prioritize fat loss while maintaining muscle.

•The combination of resistance training and proper nutrition (including adequate protein) helps preserve muscle during weight loss.

✨ Body Composition/Physique Related Terms:

1️⃣ Bulking: The act of adding weight to your physique, usually in the form of lean muscle mass. People bulk by eating a caloric surplus or consuming more calories than they burn throughout the day. The opposite of cutting. Bulking can be lean, where fat gain is minimized through eating what are perceived to be “clean” foods or dirty. Dirty bulking means eating however you like in a caloric surplus (more calories) to achieve weight gain.

2️⃣ Cutting: The act of reducing your body weight, usually by removing excess body fat from your physique. It’s achieved by being in a caloric deficit, or burning more calories than you consume in a day.

3️⃣ Gains: A term used to describe physical progress that you see, such as muscle growth or strength improvements. An example of this is your bicep becoming bigger than it was 2 weeks ago or being able to lift higher a weight than you previously could.

4️⃣ Hypertrophy (Muscle Building): Hypertrophy means growing one’s muscles, so a hypertrophy workout would be one that’s focused on building muscle over strength gains.

5️⃣ Newb/Noob Gains: This is rapid muscle or strength gain that occurs in beginners. This demonstrates your body is becoming adjusted to employing movements and how to recover to build strength.

6️⃣ Peeled: When a bodybuilder is very lean and has little fat body mass on their physique, they’re peeled. This is usually used to describe someone with great vascularity throughout their body

7️⃣ Ripped: Ripped is used to describe someone who has a physique with a lot of defined muscle mass and very little body fat.

8️⃣ Swole: Someone who has a large amount of muscle mass. Unlike someone who is ripped or peeled, one who is swole doesn’t necessarily have to have low body fat.

9️⃣ Toning (Body Recomposition): This entails seeking to get a lean, defined look by losing fat and building muscle simultaneously. This is common among those who want to “look fit” without necessarily getting bulky. It requires a balanced diet, resistance training, and sometimes slight calorie cycling.

🔟 Maintenance/Maintaining: Sustaining a healthy and balanced body composition or your current weight. This focus on consistency with workouts, nutrition, and lifestyle. This is perfect for those who are happy with their current physique.
