✨🚫 What’s A Job You’ll NEVER Do Again? 🚫✨

✨ There is one job I will absolutely never go back to, and that’s case management for the inpatient/residential substance use population. And don’t get me wrong… I have so much respect for the people who can do it long-term, because that work is no joke.

✨For me, it was grueling in a way that hit every layer, that being mentally, emotionally, and physically. I cared about my clients deeply, but the constant crises, the nonstop fires to put out, the emotional intensity, the lack of resources, the workplace snitches and butt kissers, and the pressure to hold everything together? It drained me in ways I didn’t fully understand until I stepped away.

✨ I learned a lot. I grew a lot. And I’m grateful for the experience… But would I do it again? Absolutely not.

My heart couldn’t take another round of that emotional strain.

💬 Let’s chat! What’s ONE job you’ll never go back to, and why? I wanna know what everyone else has sworn off for life. Let me know down below! 👇🏾

... Read moreBuilding on my earlier thoughts about case management, there's a specific aspect of working in residential substance use facilities that truly compounds the emotional and mental load: the constant vigilance required for client safety. I remember seeing signs like 'PLEASE ENSURE DOOR SECURELY CLOSES BEHIND YOU' everywhere, a stark reminder of the 'High Elopement Risk' that was always present. It wasn't just a physical door; it was a mental door you had to keep 'securely closed' in your mind, constantly assessing situations and potential risks. This isn't just about locking doors; it's about the immense responsibility of ensuring someone's well-being, sometimes against their own impulses. Imagine the pressure of knowing that a moment's lapse could have serious consequences. This creates a pervasive undercurrent of anxiety. You're not just managing cases; you're often monitoring individuals who might be struggling with intense cravings or mental health crises, making every interaction a delicate balance. For me, this constant state of high alert was incredibly draining. It's one thing to deal with crises as they arise, but it's another to live in a perpetual state of anticipating them. The need to 'securely close' not just physical doors, but also to build secure boundaries with clients while maintaining empathy, is a tightrope walk. You want to connect, but you also need to maintain professional distance and enforce rules that are literally life-saving. If you're in a similar role, I've learned a few things that might help. First, establish clear boundaries at work and stick to them. It's okay to say no to extra tasks if you're already stretched thin. Second, find a support system, whether it's colleagues, friends, or a therapist. Debriefing after a tough day isn't a luxury; it's a necessity. Third, build in decompression time. Whether it's listening to music on your commute, going for a walk, or simply sitting in silence, consciously create a buffer between your demanding work environment and your home life. Lastly, remember that your well-being is paramount. Just as we ensure doors are 'securely closed' for client safety, we need to 'securely close' off from the emotional intensity of the job when we leave. It’s not selfish; it’s sustainable. Recognizing when the job is taking too much, as it did for me, is a sign of self-awareness, not weakness. There's no shame in acknowledging when a role, despite its noble intentions, is no longer serving your mental and emotional health. It's about preserving yourself so you can continue to help others, perhaps in a different capacity, or simply live a healthier, happier life.
