I want to answer this practically because I think practical is more useful than inspirational when you are actually trying to figure out what to do.
The first thing I would ask is what you are doing to support your body in the middle of the day. Not at the start of the day. Not at the end of it. Right in the middle where the crash actually happens.
Because most of us are doing something for our mornings. Coffee. Maybe a good breakfast. Some kind of start to the day.
And most of us are doing something for our evenings. Winding down. Trying to rest. Getting ready for the next day.
But the middle of the day, the period right around lunch when your cortisol is naturally dropping and your gut-brain connection most needs support to carry you through the rest of it, most of us are doing nothing intentional there at all.
That gap is where I spent years losing my afternoons.
What I do now is take gut-brain support with my lunch every single day. Not another coffee. Not more willpower. Actual support for the system that produces my natural energy and mood stability from the inside.
That one thing changed what the second half of every day feels like for me more than anything else I have tried.

From personal experience, the afternoon slump can be a frustrating and productivity-killing part of the day. For years, I tried to push through it with coffee or sheer willpower, but it never truly worked. What made the difference for me was recognizing the importance of the gut-brain axis in maintaining sustained energy and stable mood. The period right around lunch is critical because cortisol levels naturally decline, which can lead to that sudden drop in alertness and motivation. Rather than reaching for another caffeine boost, I now focus on nourishing my body with specific gut-brain support during this time. This approach isn’t just about eating a balanced meal; it involves adding supplements and foods that support healthy digestion and neurochemical balance. For example, incorporating probiotics, fiber-rich foods, and certain vitamins can optimize gut health, which in turn supports brain function. I found that when I consistently take these supports alongside my lunch, my afternoons feel more energized and clear-headed, enabling me to maintain productivity without feeling wiped out. This method also promotes mood stability by preventing the negative effects of fluctuating cortisol and digestive discomfort that often go unnoticed. The key takeaway is that supporting your body internally—especially through the gut-brain connection—during the midday slump is far more effective than relying on external stimulants. If you’re struggling with losing your afternoons, consider shifting focus from morning and evening routines to what happens in the middle of the day. Taking intentional steps to support gut-brain health at lunch can transform how you experience the rest of your day, improving energy and mental clarity naturally, just as it did for me.
