... Read moreGetting a new bookshelf, especially your very first real one, is such an exciting milestone for any book lover! I totally get the struggle of having books stacked everywhere – it’s a relief to finally give them a proper home. Whether you've just unboxed a sleek white finish bookshelf, maybe one with adjustable shelves that remind you of popular finds on sites like Shein, or any budget-friendly option, the fun (and sometimes overwhelming) part is figuring out how to style it. My first bookshelf felt like a blank canvas, and I spent ages figuring out how to make it feel ‘me’ while still being practical.
One of the first things I tackled was organizing the books themselves. While color-coding is super popular and looks amazing in photos, I found it more practical to group by genre or author for easier finding. For instance, putting all my Colleen Hoover books like 'It Starts With Us' and 'It Ends With Us' together, or having a dedicated spot for my Ana Huang collection, just makes sense. You can also mix it up: some books standing vertically, others stacked horizontally with a small decorative item on top. This adds visual interest and breaks up the monotony. Think about those beloved series like 'The Hunger Games' or 'Twilight' – how can you make them pop? Maybe display the whole series together, or pick out your favorite cover to face outwards.
Beyond the books, adding personal touches is key to making your bookshelf feel like home. Don't be afraid to incorporate items that aren't books! Small plants (succulents are low maintenance!), scented candles, or framed photos can add warmth and personality. I learned that less is often more – you don't want to overcrowd your shelves. Consider the dimensions of your shelf, like those 24.8 In WX11.65 In D x 31.65 In H shelves, and choose items that fit proportionally. Sometimes, a simple clock, like the one you mentioned, can be a great addition if it fits the aesthetic, or it might be better placed elsewhere to let your books shine.
Think about functionality too. Adjustable shelves are a game-changer for accommodating different book sizes and creating varied displays. Decorative bookends aren't just practical; they can be stylish accents. If you have smaller trinkets or office supplies, pretty baskets or decorative boxes can keep things tidy and cohesive. For instance, I used a small basket to hold all my bookmarks and reading lights, keeping the shelf surface clear.
Ultimately, your bookshelf should reflect your personality. It's a journey, not a destination, so don't be afraid to experiment! What might work for a large, opulent display might not suit a compact, affordable shelf, but with a little creativity, even a simple white finish shelf can become a stunning focal point. I'd love to hear what creative solutions you've found for styling your shelves – every idea helps inspire someone else!
