College Dorm Essentials

I am a current college junior. I recently made a post about my favorite college class essentials. These are some things I had in my dorm that I think are essential to have.

-FAN: A big fan that goes in the window to help with the room temperature is so helpful! A little fan to blow at your bed is also nice if you want.

-MATTRESSES TOPPER: This is an absolute need in a dorm. The beds they give you suck without some kind of topper.

-STORAGE CUBE SHELF: I put a big one of these under my bed and it was so helpful. I also use a 1x3 as my bedside table.

-CURTAIN (optional): The building I’m in doesn’t have doors for the closets so I got a tension rod and curtain to hide everything.

-STORAGE OTTOMAN: This is great for extra storage, a step onto your bed and an extra seat. I put blankets in mine!

-WHEELY CART: A cart like this or one with drawers is so nice cuz it can be moved easily with the wheels and can hold so much stuff.

-VELCRO WRAP TOWEL: I love a velcro wrap towel because I don’t like robes and the velcro makes it not fall down when walking from the bathroom to your room.

-CLOSET SHELF HANGER: This was a game changer to maximize my closet storage. I put my pants and sweaters in it.

-SHOWER SHOES: These are another need. You have to wear shoes in college showers. It doesn’t matter what kind they are but you have to make sure they have the holes that go through the bottom.

-CLEANING SUPPLIES: Clorox wipes are an easy way to clean. Stain spray is also so helpful. Going along cleaning supplies you need laundry detergent. I used tide pods because I found it easier.

-MINI FRIDGE WITH FREEZER: It’s more expensive to buy a mini fridge with a separate freezer but it is so worth it! You will be able to have ice cream and ice if you have an ice tray.

-LONG PHONE CHARGER: I love having a long phone charger next to my bed.

-FLEXIBLE DESK LAMP: A lamp is so nice because the overhead lights suck and a lamp makes the room more cozy especially at night. A flexible lamp is also nice to aim in different directions for different reasons.

Besides the basic furniture and supplies provided by the college, investing in personal items like a fan and a mattress topper can greatly enhance your comfort by regulating room temperature and improving sleep quality. Effective storage solutions are critical in small dorm rooms. Using a storage cube shelf tucked under the bed, a wheely cart, or a storage ottoman, not only maximizes space but also keeps your belongings neatly organized. Adding a closet shelf hanger can help efficiently use vertical space for clothing storage, an important factor since many dorms lack closet doors or adequate shelving. Practical daily items such as shower shoes are essential for hygiene when using shared bathrooms. Velcro wrap towels offer a convenient alternative to robes, providing secure and easy use in the bathroom and dorm. Keeping cleaning supplies handy, like Clorox disinfecting wipes and stain sprays, ensures your space stays fresh and sanitary, while convenient laundry detergents such as Tide pods simplify laundry routines. A mini fridge with a freezer compartment offers the luxury of storing snacks and ice cream, enhancing dorm life without frequent trips to the cafeteria. Long phone chargers and flexible desk lamps improve functionality, allowing you to charge devices comfortably and control your workspace lighting, creating a cozy atmosphere that aids studying and relaxation. These recommended dorm essentials are based on practical experience and help address common dorm challenges such as limited space, comfort issues, and shared facilities. Adding these thoughtfully selected items will support a smoother transition into dorm living, improve daily convenience, and elevate your overall college experience.
