"Calico Neko Holmes" is a detective novel series by Jiro Akagawa, and it is a story about Yoshitaro Katayama, a detective who is not good at blood and women, and Holmes, a calico cat with reasoning skills that are different from humans, solving cases.
The unique setting became popular, and since the first work "The Mystery of the Calico Cat Holmes" was announced in 1978, many sequels and media mixes have been developed.

小学生に『三毛猫ホームズ』って早い？と迷う方へ。うちも最初は「原作は大人向けの描写があるのでは」と気になっていたのですが、図書館の児童書コーナーに置かれていた汐文社の『三毛猫ホームズの事件ノート』は、短編セレクト＆児童書として読みやすい構成で、かなり入りやすかったです。文章量も“ずっと重い長編”ではないので、普段はシリーズ物を途中で止めがちな子でも「1話読み切り」で達成感が出やすいのが良かった点。 検索でよく見かける「三毛猫ホームズ あらすじ」が気になる人向けにざっくり言うと、血が苦手でちょっと気弱な刑事・片山さんと、やたら勘が鋭い三毛猫ホームズが事件を解決していく、ユーモア強めのミステリーです。怖すぎないのに“謎解きの気持ちよさ”がちゃんとあって、推理もの入門にちょうどいい印象でした。 特に子ども受けしたのは、収録作の中でもタイトルから惹かれるタイプ。画像にも写っていた「幽霊退治」や「古時計（大きな古時計）」みたいに、怪談っぽい雰囲気や不思議アイテムが出てくる回は、ホラーが得意じゃない子でも“ドキドキを安全に楽しめる”ライン。うちの子は読み終わった後、「どこが伏線だったと思う？」と話すのが楽しくて、親子の会話にもつながりました。 「三毛猫ホームズは階段を上る」みたいな有名どころが気になる場合も、まずは事件ノート系の短編集で世界観に慣れてから、気に入ったらシリーズへ…の順が安心です。選び方のコツは3つだけ。 1) 児童書コーナー（出版社の児童書版）から選ぶ 2) まず短編集（事件ノート）でテンポよく読む 3) 怖がりな子は“幽霊・怪談寄り”より“日常ミステリー寄り”の回から試す 赤川次郎さんの短編集は読みやすさが強みなので、ミステリー好きの小学生（中学年〜）にはかなりおすすめ。図書館で借りればお金もかからないので、気軽に1冊試してみてください。
